Does anyone have experience or knowledge of any difference in performance between Isotherm and waeco air cooled refridgeration units? I have had conflicting advice but both ranges seem to use the same major components.

I chose the Isotherm with ASU as it senses when the engine is running and then rapidly cools the holding plate. When sailing I wanted to reduce the power requirement to a minimum. I put an extra 2" of polyurethane insulation around the sides and bottom of the top loading box and a thin polystyrene division diagonally across. It is very efficient and will keep food frozen as well as making ice if required!

I looked in detail at both a few months ago as I am intending to fit one soon.

I didn't feel that there was much to chose between them - they use the same compressors. My choice will depend primarily on the physical configuration of the compressor and evaporator.

I too went for the Isotherm with ASU - so far so good.

The Waeco ones are cheaper - however I heard some negative comments about their performance in warmer climates.

We were discouraged from the Waeco ones at the boat show by Penguin Refridgeration. They pointed out (correctly) that their compressors (running on the stand) were a lot cooler than the comparable Waeco ones (running on the stand next door). I know they use the same danfoss unit, however the Waeco ones seemed to be underspec'd for the plates they were running. Not scientific, but enough to convince me.

I suppose it depends how much you will use it and where you will use it?

Little to choose between the two - same compressor unit - Isotherm does have a "smart" sensor which puts supercool into the plate when the system volts get to above 13.5v. Hence the price difference.

I've used the ASU Isotherm for about 15 years - mainly because of the outstanding after-sales service I've had from them on 4 occasions:-

That sounds like a great piece of salesmanship. I suggest that there is nothing you can usefully tell from the temperature of the compressor running at a boatshow. Given that I imagine they were running flat out (as opposed to the 20% duty cycle you would expect) then you could almost say that the cool ones were over-specified /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
