Ismay\'s old yacht, the Five Metre \"EMU\", and other Payne Metre yahcts.

Hi All,

I'm making half hearted attempts to track down, or learn the fate of the International Five Metre Yacht, "Emu".

Launched in 1907, she was designed by Arthur Edward Payne Jnr., and built at the yard in whcih his father was a partner; Summers & Payne. She was commissioned by Mrs. J. Ismay for her son James Hainsworth Ismay, the younger brother of J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of the White Star Line.

She stayed with the Ismay family until 1919, when she disappears from Lloyds Register, only surfacing in the late 50's or early 60's, when her owner John Breakwell (and architect from Jersey) died, and she went to his brother Frank, who put her up for sale.

I'd be most grateful to learn of any information about Emu's fate or whereabouts.

The other Payne Metre yachts are

The 8's Ythene & Zelva both 1907 (Ythene - fate unknown. The latter being in dry storage in Swansea)

The 6's Hayo and Dorothea (registered to Pola 1909 ish - fate unknown)
Snowdrop 1910 (Capt. Richard Travers Dixon of Mylor - fate unknown)
Fury - Scrapped 1992
Houri 1911 - Early stages of restoration.

5 Metre Emu 1907 - fate unknown.

Cheers

Did you read it? Wonderful, I loved the Admiralty's defence that the torpedo did not run into the launch but that the launch negligently ran into their torpedo.

Update.

With thanks to Tim Street at BISMA, I now know that EMU was at the Belsize Yard, on the East bank of the River Itchen until it was redeveloped in the mid 1980's.

Does anyone know any more ?
