Last week we spent a few days on the Isle of Wight. Drove to Ventnor "marina" to see what it was like, what a wast of time. It had half a dozen dinghies and one small fishing boat in it and it was full.

Anyway, we drove along the south coast of the island a found lots of nice looking bays just crying out to have boats anchored in them but have never heard of anyone doing it. I'm going to give anchoring off the south side a go next year, is there any reason why others don't?

Have anchored off south coast of IOW a number of times - only issues is the rocky seabed and risk of anchor getting stuck. Long beach on SW side is naturist, if that's your bag?

Anchored in Freshwater Bay once. Dropped the hook, and kept getting a peculiar tugging feeling, but since the boat wasn't moving, I wasn't too bothered. Well not until I tried to retieve the anchor.

When it did eventually decide to come up, it didn't resemble the one we'd put down. Ended up having to take it home and putting it in a press to re-shape it. God knows what was down there.

Anyway, load of hassle, so won't be doing that again. Good Luck

Biggest problem with going inshore anywhere between Freshwater Bay and St Cats point, are the multitude of fishing pots, the bouys of which are connected by long lengths of floating line!!. Everytime we've been there, some one has got line around the props. Real shame, as it's quite nice to go inshore for the views, but offshore is much safer.

From St Cats round to the East is much better, but watch for pots off the headlands, but the bays much more accessible.

Thanks, I'll remember to keep a special look out for pots with lines.

Re: Isle of Wight South - Dinosours maybe

Have not seen any of Peppermints dragons but plenty of fossils to be found - you might even bump into Ronhilda if its a calm day and small swell!

Have been anchoring from Scratchels ( anybody remember the VHF direction finding bleeps and mind the rock) along as far as Atherton for many a year.
If you get the dingy out and go to Freshwater Bay Hotel can be very exciting landing in any kind of swell. I took my crew there once and got some very odd looks from staff and other diners when we turned up in oillies, welllies, boots and wet trousers from knees down, and launching the dingy half pissed to go back was equally fun.

As you say almost nobody goes there so enjoy the peace and quiet in the knowledge its mayhem a few miles to the north.
