Has anyone got recent experience of taking a motor boat up the river to get a free view of the Isle of Wight Festival?

I've read some older yacht focused articles but nothing recent.

is it worthwhile?
Will we see/hear anything?
Is there any space to anchor?

I look forward to your comments!

The tides seem perfect for a trip tomorrow afternoon but is it worthwhile?

you get a restricted side view of the stage, a good view of the screen and will hear it well. If you can dry on a mud/gravel bottom it's fab. I did it in my old outdrive boat.
I am booked into island harbour this year as I have shafts now. Over £500 marina fee..........

I will be there next week by boat but I'm going to the festival.

If the weather is nice you could tender up to free loaders bay from the folly

£500 for Island Harbour for the weekend? wow!

My boat is on shafts so I thought about mooring up at the Folly and taking the tender up to the festival.

when I took my boat up to freeloaders bay, they guys in the tenders were bloody freezing waiting to refloat, we went to bed in the cozy warm......

make sure you take VERY warm clothing.

I was given the same quote by Island Harbour, just a joke. However I recently went to Newport by boat, got talking to a guy who told me that people have taken to hammering copper nails into tress that block the view in an attempt to kill the trees and create a better visual experience for those on the river. The answer here is just buy a ticket and go legit

Tides don't look Festival Friendly NEXT Saturday

high water at 9am and 9.30pm (roughly), but check - don't rely on me - remember I didn't even get the date right!

So I assume the only way to watch it with a shaft drive boat is to moor at The Folly early morning and take the tender.

that's good to spend the evening watching bands. Not getting stuck till 2 in the morning. Weather looks like being good on sat too but a bit far out to tell.

Yes well worth it!

I was there a few years ago. Loads of other boats go. Bring the kit so you can dry out on the mud :-)

BBQ required just no 'burn your boat' stuff ;/)

Allways a good atmosphere moored in the River and in recent years this is policed by the folly mooring team to stop the muppets who think its ok to anchor mid channel or moor their boat to a channel marker buoy. They charge a £5 fee per day to cover this.
Tides are perfect for anyone staying just for the high tide, with a 9.30pm high you should be able to watch the music from 7.30 - 11.30pm.
Mud for drying out is quite soft (sink to your knees if walking on it) but does have some harder patches and gravel in mid channel.
I will be there as every year on the middle raft of yachts covered in flags.

Guys,

Each to their own but if you want to listen to the "bands" playing then you can do that on the radio/internet/cd/download, whatever floats your boat. If you want to subscribe to the "everything should be free" music thing then that's a different conversation. Seeing bands live and at IOW is different. No judgement (!) but OP was about how to get free stuff.

The IOW festival is an experience. I've parked in Island Harbour before and yes, it's expensive and, yes, I've done it once.

We now berth in CYH post that, we organise taxis/take the bus and go to whatever we want at the times we choose. I work with the taxis to so they turn up i.e. look after my group. not difficult.

Not controversial - we pay our ticket money, have decent berthing at CYH and pay taxis or bus depending on OUR agenda.

Only small issue was the "Dexter" taxi the other year. Scary. lol.

So - pay to see all the bands you want to. Otherwise this stuff doesn't exist.

Happy sitting in the mud, I know where I will be.
