Is your outboard soundproofed?

After 4 hrs on the tiller of my recently acquired Mariner 30 at the weekend I thought maybe I could make a 'tea-cosy' to sit on top to keep the noise down a bit. Not very macho/pretty I know but I'd assumed there was already some sound insulation under the cover like another old 25hp I've got. Had a look later whilst flushing it and there isn't any insulation inside. Is this normal? I know air vents through the lifting handle but allowing for this would it do any harm to lag the inside with the fireproof sound insulation from a car bonnet for example (assuming there's room from the spinning bits)?

This same thought has occured to me and I intend trying it, when I get round to it.

I have noticed that, as was the case with your old outboard, many outboards do have heavy sound insulation on the inside of the cover whereas others appear not to. In fact my father in law has a 7.5hp merc with no insulation and I saw one the other day that was a couple of years newer but otherwise identical that didhave insulation. It wasn't possible to check which was the quieter unfortunately.

I should be intereste to hear the results if you try it.
