I am sitting (aka sat) here in Turkey, perusing the interworld and am unable to view anything on youtube.I just get a screed of Turkish writing which seems to indicate that they don't approve!
It must be a recent policy as there was not a prob. Last year.Anyone else having this ? &is there a crafty way in?

Good morning:

Yes, YouTube is still blocked however there are any number of ways around this - suggest you try searching for "free proxy sites" which should give you a long list of proxies which will get through. I use VPNUK.com which also allows me to access BBC and ITV as my IP address indicates to anyone interested that I am sitting in downtown Redding.

Turkey was a secular state but the current president is moving to an Islamist state hence the ban, it has also banned Twitter which has been used in other Arab countries to organise protests. Face Book will probably be next, all three are banned in Iran. As said there are ways around the ban which the Turks are using.

Good afternoon:

Without changing this thread into a political one I must point out the the current president occupies a position that is basically ceremonial and if there is a move towards an Islamist state it will be the PM Erdogan who is behind this action.

Twitter was blocked for a while but the block has been removed due to a court order. I believe that the court has also ruled that the blockage of YouTube should be lifted but the authority involved has not acted on this ruling yet on the grounds that YouTube have not removed some of the material the court required.

Most of the recent action of the government has been to overcome charges of corruption which came to light on 17 Dec 2013.

Turkey is and remains a secular state. It was the Prime Minister who banned You Tube for reasons which most disagree with . Twitter was banned for a short time but after a pronouncement by the Constitutional Court it is no longer banned.
