Is Toilet Discharge Hose Smooth on the Outside?

Just removed the discharge hose from the forward heads.... it's smooth on the inside, but has an encased corrugating wire running in a spiral along its' length, (for strength and to prevent kinking I guess).

The wire makes it really difficult to get it through all the little holes as it jams all the time.

In the end, I've chopped it into 3 pieces to get it out.

Anyway... is it standard these days for 38mm toilet grade hose to be smooth on the outside so that you can slide it through all the holes and around all the corners?

If it isn't, I dont think it's fittable without taking the boat apart.

(Can you tell it's 1am, I've just got the damned hose out, and I'm pigging fed up with it!!!)

Cheers

Most oif the ones I've seen are a bit bumpy on the outside. I have seen one make, think its vetus, which is smooth all over! That should help you out! I hate effin toilets!! So know how you feel. I sometimes thin k they put the hoses in, then build the boat!

Certainly applies to my boat, at least the heads joinery was built after the discharge hose was put in. I must replace mine of of these days and to make it easier I thought I might buy an anti-syphon U-fitting and then it's just a case of pushing up the two vertical parts through the holes in the shelving and connecting them to the fitting. Simpler than trying to fit a single length of hose.

That's the plan anyway.......... But, as a famous German general said "No plan survives contact with the enemy".

Having replaced the very same pipes on my 44, I did manage to find hoses that were almost smooth on the outside. They had a slight indentation rather than a rib and it did make a huge difference getting the pipe in again. It also happened to be the most expensive hose around, something like £9 a meter.

I did find getting the new hose onto the stopcock again the most difficult part. After 2 hours of trying things, a hair drier pointed on the end for at least 5 mins, softened it so that it went on without a problem. Soap, fairy liquid, hot water etc just were not enough.

Malcolm,

Many thanks for the offer.

Would be interested but I would need to get it to Portugal. Not sure 8m would go in my case, along with the other stuff.

Richard,

sorry to see that you are selling Hana, but I understand the cost/size equation.

The local boatyard in Lagos sells it for 10 euros per metre, (£7), so I'm going to try and have a look at it later today.

The hairdryer tip seems to be critical.

Cheers

Richard

PS who's going to tell me how my boat works once you have sold? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I don't think you can ever forget how a boat works....hours of frustration for many jobs keeps it fresh (and sometimes raw) in the memory /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There is an easy way to get the pipe onto the end fitting - boil up a pan of water and put both the metal end fitting and plastic poo pipe in the water ... then withdraw the pipe, prise it open with a your radiator spanners (or similar) then get the metal fitting out ... as the fitting is hot (so careful with it) the pipe doesn't cool rapidly when it comes in contact - so stays stretched .... job done! ... Ok - best done out of the water so you can get the fitting off ... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Richard,
one tip I can give you for getting the hose over the ends, is the same tip for fitting exhaust hose, pull the wire out of the end, until its back to the limit of the fitting, cut it off and stuff the end back in. You now have a flexible bit of hose on the end to shove over the fitting, easy peasy.
It doesnt weaken the hose over the main part and the part without wire is supported by the fitting.
Hope this helps.

Bought some nice thick smooth white 38mm hose from Sopromar Boatyard, Lagos. 10 euros per metre, marked:

Cordsteel P.L. Non Toxic - Special For Boats.

3 pieces removed measured 6.75m, bought 8m, just in case.

With a lot of pushing and pulling, (including drilling 2 holes in the ends to tie on a mouse line, and using a bent coat hanger to pull the mouse where I couldnt reach), managed to get it through all the nooks and crannies.

The hose slid onto the seacock and toilet end just slightly tight... done up with 2 jubilee clips each end, works fine.

Not a job for the faint hearted.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.

Richard
