Is this what's called a broach?

Not a broach, it's a round down leading into a gybe, a broach would have gone the other way. This move is commonly known as a "Chinese gybe". Quite a good example!

Here's our version - also complete with auto firing of a lifejacket!

And no, harnesses are not appropriate for that situation.

Depends who you talk to. Old school sailors who remember the days of the IOR - when people used to antifoul their spreaders - would call it a leeward broach.

Nice film! Thanks. So you let go of the spi halyard to get upright, then recover the spi from the water while continuing to run downwind under main?

Yes I can see that and I realise it was a silly question now. Unless you want to do lacework with the lifelines!

Yes. But with a caveat. It worked because we accelerated fast when we popped up, so the sail was just skipping over the surface. If you allow the kite to sink you have to stop, and then it's the devil's own job to get the thing back on board.

And it's altogether best if you can manage to keep the thing out of the water altogether, but I've only ever managed that once in a chinese recovery!

We usually blow the sheet... that way the kite is still free to get blown out for'ard... and will be pulled up from the water as you come upright...
