I cant answer if your engine is included but I can explain other issues. Volvo don't make all their engines. Some are Perkins remanufactured for Volvo, my old sail drive was actually a Honda on a Penta gearbox and leg, and no doubt some might be Ford. Much the same as my sons V60 car has a Ford Zetec block. It theoretically might mean cheaper spares if from original manufacturer but beware of knowing which bits need Volvo-ising.

Think its a 5.0 litre GM V8 based petrol engine, rated at 225bhp or about the same as a mid range VW Golf Diesel.

Should last forever if it doesn't rust away! Marinised parts probably horrific cost, base engine parts perhaps very cheap if you can identify them!?

Hi.

I've got a pair of Volvo Penta AQ225Ds from 1982. (Yup, that's 450hp!)

Been going nuts with finding a service manual. I

Can anyone make sense of this for me? Are my engines included? And why are Ford and GM listed if it's a Volvo manual?

Cheers! ;-)

The manual in your links does not seem to cover the AQ225D , only the A & B versions. However the Official VP manual apears to cover all AQ225 versions and others

I think I would double check that the VP manual covers the engine and if it does buy that. I assume the price is in Euros

It is only available in printed form though)

You sure?

Web page says: 305 V8 (AQ200C/D/F, AQ211A, AQ225C/D/F, AQ231A, 500, 501)

Mine being two AQ225Ds. the title of the book is Volvo Penta Stern Drives, 1968-1993 so it should be in there...

Thanks for the link BTW.

I'm hoping it just needs the usual bits of maintenance. It was working fine when I last ran it a few years ago. (!*!) There's a small instruction book that gives a list of things to check, but I think I need something a bit more detailed.

Any tips on this? What usually goes bad when an engine is left sitting like this? Before even attempting to start up, does cleaning the carbeurettor seem like a good idea? I'll obviously be draining and replacing the oil and petrol (gas), and putting in fresh batteries.

This is going to be a pig of a job. :(

EDIT: Volvo give a despatch date nine days away, from Germany! Sigh. I'd rather get moving on this sooner.

Both manuals are worth having the VP book only covers the engine whilst the other covers the range of engines and drives as described
Volvo Penta mainly used GM truck for their base engines but due to supply difficulties used Ford for a short time
These units were produced in the US as opposed to the inline four and sixes which were marinised car engines
As the exhaust manifolds are cast iron they suffer from corrosion so worth checking BEFORE starting plugs out and bar the engine over

I think you're right Scottie. I'll get both.

Thanks for the tip on the exhaust manifolds.

What do you mean by 'plugs out and bar the engine over'?

You are right, I missed that.

Id still buy the VP manual as it should be more specific. The trouble with some of the 3rd party manuals is that they often cover too many models

I've ordered the one on ebay. It should arrive soon. Then make a decision about whether to buy the other. Fact is I'm selling the boat so I'll only need it for a couple of weeks, and £40 is £40...
