Eu frequently brings infraction or other proceedings against UK. It is one of the reasons we pay them so much, so they can be finicky and start hugely expensive proceedings. Few of which succeed, but the lawyers love 'em!

I don't think this one has legs.

See threads on "motor boats" and "east coast" on this site that gave been running all week.

That rya post is copy of email I got from them and probably only posted up cos I rattled their cage first and demanded to know what they were doing.

Not sure I share rafiki's optimism.

Belgians have been sulking about this and fining Brit yachts a lot of money for a while now, this ain't going to go away.

I was about to ask a similar question, but as usual Appollo got there first. I have asked a local supplier for a quote for a drum 210 litres, of gas oil. What stops you from using this on the non tidal, other than perhaps the threat of a check from someone, not sure who? Not even sure yet if it will work out cheaper than marina fuel.

Other than evading duty (the penalty for which is paying the duty portion plus a monetary slap on the wrist), then nothing practical.

Decanting diesel from bulk storage into jerry cans thence into boats is a pain; the stuff smells and the smell pervades, quite a different issue than when dealing with petrol.

Part of the reason why the Revenue considered the scheme to retain Red was that they didn't want hordes of boating folk filling from cans with the concomitant real risk of spills / drips polluting watercourses. At least boatyard diesel would (should) be below the price of supermarket road fuel, making cans unattractive.

If you go the bulk route there's no way you can be honest and pay the extra duty at source as a normal RDCO has to have a separate registration to supply fuel for marine use and supplying to anything other than your boat's tank is "discouraged".

When I investigated the issue before the Revenue scheme was finalised, the cost of 205l barrels was not significantly different (about 10 ppl) from buying form a riverside outlet. Since then the difference has increased markedly. Boiler juice quote 68ppl for Red, my last domestic price quoted on the Thames (Reading) was 99ppl....
