Just got back from a trip around the northern Ionian islands from our base in Corfu. The most stunning location, with the clearest weater I have seen in years was a place called Lakka on Paxos. The photos don't do justice to the luminous turquoise blue of the water which is almost caribbean like in quality. We spent several days at anchor here. Very sheltered with a lovely little archetypal greek island town a 5 minute dinghy ride away with nice selection of tavernas etc. Heaven.

in Tropea next to Capo Vaticano in South Italy in 2004 and August which means very hot water at 28 degrees
I could my anchor and chain easily in about fifteen metres fifty feet approx of debth
worth to note that it was very hot water which makes the sea a bit dizzy as any nice sandy bottomed u go in the Med off season or in early Spring you normally have similar conditions as above

The clearest water I've ever seen is in the Keri Caves on Zakynthos. You can clearly see the seabed and due to some optical illusion, it looks as if the water is only a few feet deep, when in reality it's about 100 ft.

Quite extraordinary.

I hope it's still the same - this was 25+ years ago, when the airport had only just opened and there was one UK flight a week. I believe it's a party island now, and I know there's been some hassle about turtles (who lay their eggs on a nearby beach) being disturbed by night visitors with torches, so it may not be as quiet and carefree as it was then.....

Hi we have sailed and moored there and I agree it is stunning, lucky you, I am at the top of Portsmouth harbour at the mo and it doesnt look quite the same.
Cheers

Likewise, we were there about 27yrs ago when i was younger, long before it become commercialized. I recall getting burnt rotten because I was windsurfing, and my feet were so swollen, I wasn't able to waterski, I was very upset.

I also recall some cave, so it might be the same.

I remember it as Zante though, not Zakynthos.

Cheers

Al.

Same place. We'd booked our honeymoon in Zante and were a bit nonplussed when the captain of the plane announced that we were off to Zakynthos /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I believe it's to do with the Venetians, who gave the Ionian Islands Italianate names (eg Corfu, which is really called Kerkyra).

I think the travel agents use the name Zante because it's easier to pronounce when you're lagered up and trying to pull on the dance floor /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was going to reply to your PM, but yer box is full so can't, so will just paste it here instead.

Honeymoon,,,, Married 27yrs!!!! Blimey you're that old!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was young, just thinking about it now, I was maybe 13 or 14 actually. But I can remember the holiday very well, probably the hotest place I'd every been too.

Cheers

Al.
PS, you don't know anyone selling a Mariah 182 for £5k do you? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was a child bridegroom.

I have now mucked out the Augean Stables of my PM box.

Fraid I don't know anyone flogging a Mariah 182 - and anyway, you need a Sea Ray if you're going to venture into open waters /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Stunning.

SWMBO and I judge many holiday destinations by the clarity of the water, and that looks super.

Best water we've seen was in the Sulu Sea... not just for clarity, but marine life.

Hoping for a day when we have time to cruise there.

Really! They are just like an oil slick now!

Actually since the Govt have started charging for ships anchoring off the number of ships have reduced a lot and the water seems clearer but still not that good!

The further into the Med you go it seems more like that.
