Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

Ahh awake after a good 8 hours sleep, but is there any point to getting out of bed I can see out the deck saloon windows into the yard and shock horror..... More rain.

THe sound of the pitter patter on the deck and the gentle clanging of something onto errr... something else, shall i get up ?
NO wheres the chuffin point, cant paint and cant varnish in this [--word removed--] , looks like a playstation day, so mug of tea and back to bed...... yawn

What do you reckon is this season worse than last year, has anyone any scientific rain/wind data that can substantiate the hard facts!!!

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

by this time last year, we had all the hay and haylage in from the fields. I have managed to get 40% in so far. So this summer is 60% worse than last year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Enough statistics for you ?

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

Only lost 1 days dailing to rain this year. Last year I managed 2 days sailing total. Last summer we had a new baby though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Depends where abouts you are in UK. I would say up here we have had a better year so far. There was a bit of a hiccup in June, but a beautiful sunny day again today-rain tomorrow though. While the south of the country had a half decent summer last year, we up here had it cold and wet.

Better than last year. Had two attempts at a summer cruise last year. First: stuck in Ramsgate 3 days and gave up and came back. Second a couple of weeks later stuck in Shoreham couple of days and gave up and came back.

This year had good 3 and a bit decent weeks along south coast in June and numerous days /2 days before and since.

Showers certainly and a bit of wind but not the prolonged rain and high winds and low temperatures that I remember from last summer.

Defo better this year. No evidence, mind, just the recollection.

Early on we had great weather, but in June it started to spoil itself and July was so-so. As I've had lots of things to do sailing hasn't been a major priority, but have managed a few outings. I'm not allowed this week as I haven't to injure myself before Thursday. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yesterday from the garden it looked like this.........

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

We have just come back from hols in Cornwall(non boaty) and the weather was quite good,no rain and lots of sun,SWMBO has even got white bits. But on the boating side we have lots of dry weather but very windy(S Wales), lots of boats from our club went up to the Bristol harbour fest and a few got into trouble on the way back due to high wind over tide conditions i belive, but all are back safe and sound,so i would say so far in this neck of the woods less rain than last year but a bit more wind.

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

My thoughts exactly - this time last year we'd just got rid of four feet in the house, so yes, this year is better...
But not by much!
Luckily most of my time is now spent in Brittany, and currently it's sunny and 23 deg...

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

What we're missing this year is a consistent spell of good weather to make longer passages / cruises. There's been a lot of nice days, or even 2-3 day slots, but then it all falls apart. Generally though this is a bit of a re-run of last year without the torrential rain. If summer actually arrives at the end of August, then it'll be the same as last year. Also, the way the depressions have been coming in, I suspect the jetstream is again a way south of where it should be, so maybe that's the key. Where's our Met experts??

[/ QUOTE ]Oh, it's been better than that, with some quite long spells of really good settled weather - we've been out in at least three so far this year. You've just not gone out at the right times. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

This is much better than last year. No need to hop from one marina to another between storms.

This year is a typical English summer, although somewhat cooler than we have been used to in recent years.

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

It is for rain (in some parts of the country) and cold but not for wind

Still not interested in sitting down below in some harbour watching the rain coming down - too much to do at home and elsewhere

Re: Just as bad.

The summer weather for two years has been awful for me.

In 2007 & 2008 I have had 4 cruises longer than a week.

June 2007

Headed off to the CI same evening as Rolling Stones IOW fireworks. 8 days of chilly easterly winds and indifferent slab cloud cover punctuated by 3 brighter half days. Returned 1 day before a depression slammed the Channel with multiple LB callouts.

August 2007

12 days on north Brittany Coast. Was weather bound on many days as two distinct depressions F7 to F9 passed close by 6 days apart. Had to hire car to get swmbo back to the airport.

2nd May Bank Holiday 2008

9 days, Solent and Dorset Coast. Chilly cold easterly winds for 5 days. Weather on 2nd weekend sent most people back in for shelter. Final Monday & Tuesday saw strong winds and rain.

July/August 2008

Struggled for whole week to get down to Plymouth from Solent for crew pickup. Gave up at Brixham due to a week of westerly F5 - F7 with a few short lulls.

Week 1 of 15 day cruise ok’ish but light northerlies made it feel like an early season weather. Final long week-end eventually delivered 4 days of proper summer weather.

Swmbo has returned to work and I need a 40 hour weather window for a solo trip to SW Ireland. The prognosis is bad as the jetstream delivers a chain closely spaced depressions aimed as the southern UK. The weather looks unsettled down south for another 13 days at least.

To be honest I am beginning to question the wisdom of owning an open cockpit sailing boat in the UK. I read an article about the gulf stream slowing down, so maybe the Azores summer high is becoming an historical weather artefact.

If I could repeat the last two years I would have been happier chugging through the French canals or trailing a Cornish Shrimper to a summer sailing venue and spending the money saved on Bed & Breakfast.

Re: Just as bad.

hmm best get up sounds like it stopped raining, finally might get some work done.

Personally last year was a wash out the few times I took the (t)rusty old ketch out it was chucking it down with precipitation so gave up. So far this year the few days Ive had "off" have been spent catching up on the work to the boat that didnt get done last year ... due to the precipitation !

Now sat in the yard for a week (all prebooked) waiting to get a lick of paint on the topsides, I had hoped to get away next week with mytwo youngsters as they are on holiday. Looks like they will be in the bilge painting again ( Is that illegal ?) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

granted there has been a few short spells that looked like summer and I have had a singular beach barbie that was good, but if the weather doesnt get better soon it will be as bad as last season.

So who else is booking in at the Folly for christmas day which guarenteed WILL be bright and sunny ... any takers

Re: Just as bad.

Well we are sitting in Plymouth yacht haven, had 6 decent days two weeks ago as a prelim, now our main cruise....

So far its been rain and or strong wind warnings everday since Saturday, its heaving down now, its forecast to heave down tommororw, thursday, saturday and sunday, next week looks the same. so thats this summers cruise screwed.

The past two years the weather has been colder, and overall I think worse, but this is the first year in 3 that the weather has been this been this poor at this time.....

Both the last two yeas we managed to succesfully get in a decent cruise, but we are just so fed up with the rain that we can not be arsed anymore..... at least in the marina we have hot showers and electricery...

So , not happy. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Time to sell up maybe?

Re: Is this \"season\" worse than the last ?

About the same, I reckon.

Luckily our 2-week cruise had sunshine for 13 days - came home as it rained on us.

Since then have had a few good days sailing but mostly rain at some point in the weekends.

Tomatoes have blight and so does the apple tree - so it can't be good!
