Is this Rip off britain?

VP prices don't seem too bad where I am, but more than same sort of thing for a car - not ever had to buy any big component but for consumables have never bin enuff to make my eyes water. A couple of examples off a recent order for MD22L converted approx to GB Pounds -

Oil filters - GBP 10
Timing Belt - GBP 52
Impellor Kit - GBP 19

Supplier I use normally offers an equivalent without me going to the trouble to hunt them down and if saving worthwhile eg GBP 3 for a fuel filter instead of around GBP 15 - 20 (I think it is) for VP one.

I wonder how these compare?

For my engines (KAD43) a kompressor belt is around £30, Impellor £30, Anodes goes 3 on 1 engine, each around £30

I believe the anodes should be around 1/5th, the impeller around 1/2 and the belt also 1/2 of their current price if they had to survive with a bit of competition.
Even at this level they would still have a healthy margin.

Eventhough I think these prices are bad when you need engine or transmission sparepart its even worse. I had the upper gearbox replaced on a DP drive and it was priced at £2740!!!

My car is an Audi and in all fairness I think they are equally greedy.

Kiwi Prop.
Just do it.

But seriously, Alan at Vecta Marine is soooooo helpful.
His computer prediction programme seemed not to work for my configuration, and we had to upblade by 1/2 an inch, and add a degree to the pitch. He sent me a spare set of blades to exchange, so I dried out on the shingle, which took 40 minutes. The blade change was done in under 5 minutes.
What no one has done yet is to produce a protractor to check the blade angles on, but I will do it this winter when the boat is on the hard.
Upwind performance is very good, as expected. Acceleration out of tacks is much improved
Under power, reverse is king. I just reversed against tide and wind of 33 knots today to clear a pontoon and moorings, and it was making water over the transom at 5 knots.
Forward it seems to take a second or two to bite, but then takes off smoothly. I have the same forward speed at max revs as with the fixed prop before, at around 8 knots.
I trawled the web for owner experiences, and found no adverse comments even after 5 years use, and havent found anyone breaking a blade. They are Zytel, and have terrific impact deflection/absorption properties. No marks on mine at all, even though there is evidence of rope on the Stripper fitted behind it (also highly recommended).
At 795 quid + VAT, it is a no brainer, and you get a free baseball cap. Which is nice.
Order at shows and you will possibly get 10% discount....

I went to a Volvo dealer today to ask about a cap for the water header tank on a Volvo2030.

The cap, the same type as a car radiater, was wait for it ................................£59:00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll say it again in case you missed it £59:00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very odd this....

Using say an MD2030B as an example

- heat exchanger pressure cap, part number 861905 = RRP £26.04 inc (which is what I guess you are referring to)

- if present, expansion tank pressure cap, part number 1674083 = RRP £10.36 inc
- if using expansion tank, different heat exchanger pressure cap including hose pipe connections etc, part number 3581441 = RRP £101.68 inc

So whom ever gave you the price of £59.00 clearly made an error !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah and by the way, the pressure cap for say a Perkins M30, part number 310110220 = RRP £12.42 inc

Drop a line to parts@goldenarrow.co.uk asking for Lee, he has an M30 pressure cap ready to go in the post, if you so require. Or can order you up the VP, MD2030B pressure cap if you'd rather have that.

Did not realise the Kiwi pitch astern is fixed.

For me thats another vote for Variprop. Pitch is fully adjustable from outside both astern and forwards. I have had these on 2 charter boats now and would not hesitate to recommend them. For larger power engines they also have a 4 bladed version (currently being evaluated on my 75hp yanmar)

I have now looked into all the prop options 3 times (after 1st Volvo folding prop never laster more than 1 year (approx 500hrs) on a charter boat) and every time came up with the Variprop being the best engineered for my own heavy charter usage.
