007: Licence to sail
James Bond will sail a strip-planked Spirit 54 in the latest Bond film, Casino Royale, due for UK release on 17 November.
According to Bond expert and memorabilia dealer Simon Lynes, this will be the first time that 007 has chosen a traditional vessel; the many Bond boats now seen as classic, like the Fairey Huntress in From Russia with love, were all modern in their day. Details are sparse at present, but it's understood that, true to form, the playboy naval commander, played by first-timer Daniel Craig, will be doing more than just sailing on board the wooden sloop.

Pinched from Classic Magazine ( if they object they'll pull it ) , just thought some enthusiasts might be interested

The real James Bond, ie the man who inspired Fleming to use his name, was a harmless ornithologist who often sailed on my boat in the 1920s when it was owned by his brother.

A not-very-useful fact of possibly mild passing interest.

We expect you to sail Mr Bond!

I'm happy to report that this is new news! The other mags will probably publish something when they get the press release from Spirit Yachts, which has not gone out yet. The boat actually belongs to Bond in the film, so it appears quite a bit - in Venice and the Bahamas. Does this mean wooden boats are finally officially cool? The fact that he sailed on Clifford's boat in the 1920s is of interest to me, as are most things Bond... Incidentally, APT Films are making a documentary (two-hour long, cinema release a bit like Touching the Void) about the 1968 Golden Globe Race (RKJ, Crowhurst etc). I can't wait for that to come out either.

Re: We expect you to sail Mr Bond!

As a taxpayer, I am disgusted at the amount this Bond chap is paid for the privalege of belting around in flash motors and overpowering women. Back in the 50s, Bond was only paid enough to maintain a Chelsea flat (and resident scottish treasure May) and a custom Bentley. The only spirits he spent much money on came in bottles.

Also, I presume that as Commander Bond is still supposedly a commissioned naval officer, he will be wearing the appropriate ensign?
