Is this an unusual traveller design?

This is the traveller arrangement on a Salty Dog 26 I'm looking at.
The traveller seems to be a ring that slides across this bar, with a cleat that will limit its movement from the centre to the leeward side.

I'd have thought you'd want some mechanism that would allow you to pull the traveller car to windward more than the centreline?...

Am I missing a component or is this how they work?

She is a cruising boat & that is a cheap solution to take the mainsheet jammer.

Just a cheapy version of the old fashioned sheet horse adapted to run across the bridge deck. Simple and gives some control over the mainsheet.

Looks alright to me. You don't need to have the sheet to windward, and this arrangement means the trim is the same on both tacks.

So if I buy the boat, should I put a traveller on my shopping list, or is it completely unnecessary?

If you buy the boat there will be many more important calls on your money than a new traveller.

A traveller can do several things. This one is pretty pathetic. But then might be OK for it's intended use. If it had the ability to haul the main sheet block up to windward to the extent of the travel then it could both be used to get the main working better and to allow for drop down a little in gusts while keeping main sheet on.
The traveller on my little boat has a track and car on rollers but extends right across the top of the bridge deck close to the entrance hatch. This means that on a run I can let the traveller right out yet pull the main sheet down to minimise chafe on the spreaders and to help avert a gybe.
So yes traveller is OK but if you wanted could be a lot better. good luck olewill
