Just been informed by GJW Insurance that it will cost me a further £74.00 extra for cover to take my boat to Paris this summer.

We have done the same trip twice before and never been charged extra.

The young lady told me it is something they have started this year.

Anyone else come across this?

Is it me being paranoid or am I being ripped off

You might be one of the lucky ones who has received good advice /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Paris is not Coastal Waters from Brest to Elbe and will require an extension on many polices but is frequently overlooked.

Some polices now have started to use Latitude for limits and no longer use Brest to Elbe which helps avoid the problem (these may also include inland waters but best to check.)

After some thought I took issue with GJW over this and have just received a phone call saying that they have spoken to the underwriter and will not now be implementing the extra charge - so my assumption must be that is WAS a rip off.

of course it was a rip off - just like when you have to buy a "green card" to take your car to Europe. After all, we do live in rip off Britain.

They will still have to issue a set of documents for you to extend the cover and post them on to you.

That admin must be worth £30 ?????????
That only left £40 for the extra cover
£4 for our Government in Insurance tax

When MBM went to Paris in 98 5 out of 20 boats were seriously damaged.

The last time we went our boat sustained damage to both sets of duo props.

rip off may be a little ott , but agreed I changed Insurers to one that does not make a charge .

BTW
we went to Paris with a Trader called SeaDweller, Skipper was very friendly and helpful , if it was you hello again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We are with St Margarets.
I was thinking of going to Paris about 18 months ago so I called them - no problem and no extra charges - then anyway.

They do, however charge more if the boat is in the Med - I cant think why.
Also they wanted an additional £100 on the premium if I was going to cross Biscay - I can sort of understand that and I think all companies do.

I know why they charge more in the med.......I got whalloped by a drunken Catalunian and his two (!!) girlfriends in a little put-put in Palamos harbour last March!!!

Thankfully no damage to speak of (he hit the laid line and my transom hit the pontoon, fortunatly only a scuff) but it could have got expensive.
