I think there is more to this than meets the eye, it seems a bit odd that a mentally ill Canadian, a doctor from Surrey and a retired fisherman have set off on ARC together, 3 seems a small crew, its not 2 watches of 2 is it?
I note that one of the crew is a practising doctor. It's likely, therefore, that her judgement would be regarded as sufficiently informed to justify the crew's actions. Wasn't there a similar case a year or so back, where the crew tied a raving skipper to the mast and called for help?
I have heard varying accounts of the Spanish story. The version I heard is that it got very rough and the inexperienced crew wanted to get to land. The skipper felt it was too dangerous and that they should tought it out. The two crew didn't agree, tied the skipper to the mast and called a mayday. Unfortunately (allegedly) it slipped their mind that skipper was tied to the mast and they only told the helicopter crew sometime into the journey back to the mainland.
As for the Mirabelle V story seems a bit tough that there was no-one else on ARC willing to help get this blokes boat to somewhere safe.

Compromise was right at the back of the fleet so it would have meant someone spending days going upwind to get back to them. I'd been keeping an eye on their 'progress for a few days and wondering what was going on.!
Poor skipper he has my sympathies, sailing with a Kerryman is enough to drive anyone insane! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
The intention appeared to be singlehanded watches for the skipper and mate, with the third crew member as doctor/cook - http://www.boatdiary.com/crew.html.
the only time a master of a vessel can be legally replaced without a relief is if the master is found to be mentally unbalanced, such that he cannot carry out his duties and obligations.
in which case the second 'in command' takes the role of master. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
