I am looking to "upgrade" to a boat with a small(ish) cabin that I can weekend on - with some sort of half decent heads for the missus or she'll whinge.....

Easy so far....

Would also like some performance so I can tow a ringo or even a skiier....

Still possible eh??........

Trouble is my budget is really £5k or perhaps £6 if I feel flush.

So there we have the problem!!!!!

I have looked at Buy a Boat under £20k and have come to the conclusion I am not rich enough - but there are some Shetland boats about that might fit the bill....

I once had a 535 and considering it's size and price I thought it a wonderful boat.

I am thinking of either a Family Four, Kestrel, Black Hawk, Black Prince (too big to trail behind normal car??) 570 or 610......

There is a Black Prince in BAB under 20k which looks a decent buy at £6500 but does anyone know anything about them at all???

All sensible help gratefully appreciated...

Cheers,

Grant

My first boat ( 7 years ago) was a Shetland 570 with a 20hp Evenrude. Purchased from Hobbs of Henley for £2700. Impulse purchase - got hooked - traded up 3 years later & sold the 570 for £1k profit. Great boat & will take a fair size outboard if needed

The Shetland Black Hawk is a great all round boat. At £6k you should be able to get a good one and go for the outboard version. However as most of the money is for the engine it may be worth looking for one that has had an easy life on the canals and only has a small engine. This way it will bring the price down to 2.5-3.5k.

Then spend the money on a good outboard engine (75hp-90hp) should be fine and there are plenty around. Also a good trailer and some safety equipment. £6k should get you a great package if you are willing to do the legwork in this way. Then keep the small engine as a back up.

I have never had the pleasure of owning one but have known many happy owners and you can get a lot of solid boat for the money!

Good luck

Paul

We bought our first boat 2 years ago, We got a 1996 Fletcher 18 Sportscruiser, with a 115 Mecury o/b & Trailer, for £6000. It was a great boat, cuddy, toilet, sink with tap and stove, we used it every weekend usually staying overnight, and also did water skiing off it. I was worried about buying a boat of that age, and to me £6k was a lot, so i spent £150 and had it surveyed, It gave me peace of mind.
I bought that mag every month, but nothing much came up worth looking at, The best thing to do is go round local marinas and ask if they have any small boats for sale,We found ours in the yard at Largs marina, after i told someone we were looking for our first boat, Then the usual happened 'A friend of a Friend, has taken a small boat as trade in, might suit you, go and look, So we did and it wasn't exactly what we were looking for, but thought it ideal for our first boat. We traded up a year later and sold it for a £2500 profit..
Fletchers are good solid built British boats, Have a look at them.

Cheers
Alistair.

Hi, im soon going to be selling my shetland speedwell, this in my opinion is a much better boat than a 570 as its 21 1/2 feet and has standing headroom in cabin along with a seperate toilet compartment, the 570 cabin is very very small and the loo being between the v berth on the floor would be a real pain to use if sleeping aboard, ive owned my speedwell for 2 years and have undertaken a complete refit of which there would be too much to fully list on here but the basics are, new marine ply floors and cockpit berths, new seats, new canopy, nearly new 40hp yamaha now done approx 60 hrs with gauges, new steering system, three new fuel tanks, new gps, log, fishfinder, new marine toilet, new foam cushions, complete new re-wire, ive fitted an oven as well as the standard 2 burner hob/grill and sink, the only jobs left to complete the new boat effect are to paint/spray the hull (ive already prepared and substantially gelcoated scratches as it was previously used on a canal) and to line the cabin and cockpit and fit covers on cushions, it also comes complete with a twin axel trailer recently overhauled with all new rollers and tyres, with just me on board and standard equipment the 40hp yamaha pushes her to 17.5 knots max and she cruises nicely at 12, the max engine size for the boat is 65hp and the hull design speed is 27 knots, so if you wanted to crank up the speed then this can be easily done with a larger engine, once i finish the hull, covers and lineings, then i will be placing on the market at £7000, if your interested in purchasing as is, then i will accept £6000, im located in edinburgh and can supply pics and could also deliver at a cost if required, if interested, then you can email me at wonger_trev@hotmail.com

regards

reason for selling is after all this work, i fancy going bigger and probably need a brain transplant, the boat is ready for use and has provided my wife and our two sons with two two week holidays aboard for which its amazing just how much stowage space this boat has for its size, this being one of the main reasons i chose her over a 570
