Is there enough air getting to my engine?

Not wishing to hijack the engine bay fan thread - on which I've read about the huge amounts of air Diesel engines suck in, I went to the boat today and my 1GM10 has the standard air filter so all this air has to go in through a tube with an intake hole about 1" diameter! My engine is boxed in with fairly close fitting ply with insulation on the inside. It's open to the bilges at the front end but they are closed off with those round plastic screw on covers, so the only obvious air inlet is the hole for the starting handle which is about the same size as the air intake.
Is it enough?

It's only about a 300cc engine, it's not going to use huge amounts of air. Has it performed OK up to now?

At 1800rpm a 1GM10 is going round 30 times per second and inducting 15 times per second, so that's 4.5 litres (a gallon, pleasantly) per second. Not huge, but still quite a lot.

Thanks for doing the sums that I was about to tackle!

Ta. It's made me wonder about the supply to my own 1GM10, which is by through the cockpit locker. It smokes like fury on full throttle, so I shall have to do a wee experiment and remove the companionway step to see if that makes a difference. I suspect it won't, but it's worth a try.

Never seemed to have a problem with my 1GM10 until I fitted thick soundproofing onto the inside of the engine compartment cover. Small 22 footer, vertical cover with 2 securing clips. Having motored about 3 miles down river, the engine suddenly coughed, and then again. I opened up the cover, and have always since left it slightly open. No further 'problems'. I also have a small diameter inspection plate in the cockpit (fitted that to store small stuff inside whilst sailing), which I now remove the cover from when under motor. This allows much more air into the bilge/engine area, which would otherwise be quite well shut up. I think that a good supply of clean air is essential. Pity about leaving the engine cover lose, as there's as much noise now as before I put the insulation on!:(
