A. won't move up on lock laybys
B. refuse to move up in locks to let somebody in when on public power
C. close the gates on somebody approaching the lock?

If so, can I nominate "Petalova", a biggish Broom type last night at Hurley under "B" above.

I am out and about next weekend, first time in years and cant wait to tell them whose boss....(thats a joke before anyone takes it the wrong way..)
 
I fear it would be a very long thread indeed.....

Quite apart from the act of discourtesy, peeps seem to be unaware that at some locks that being unable to get on the layby can cause problems for some craft. Head and tail weir streams can make it difficult for a boat to keep station in confined waters.

OTOH current attitudes in society of "I'm OK and the rest can *** off" is all too obvious wherever you are.

Such a shame as working together in pursuit of a common aim - relaxing boating - is much more pleasant when done in concert.

Well it does for me....
 
Agreed; he's a local boater & I made the point several times the roles could be reversed next Sunday/Bank Holiday, and he'd want me to move up - which I think you should do without being asked.

I am shocked. John George who owns Petalova apart from being one of the best boat handlers on the Thames is one of the most hail fellow well met geezers you can ever meet. Always joking and mucking around he is the last person I would have thought of when accusals of bad boating manners are chucked around. I am dumbfounded.

I guess everybody can have a bad day, we saw them at Sonning and it was only mildly annoying to be held up, certainly no verbals were exchanged, I just had another beer whilst waiting :)
 
& I don't want to make a big thing of it; certainly in our case words were exchanged (particularly with/by my wife) but as Chris says, everybody has a bad day. I would move up for Petalova or anybody else even after yesterday because it's the right thing to do. Perhaps I should have just waited/gone to help.

I hope that I take that with the sarcasm that it appears to have - Yes John George is one of the best boat handlers on the Thames but it does not give him (or his wife) the right to think that they own the river. We can all be the best boat handlers and the nastiest poeple on the river but he does take the biscuit :eek:
Oh and he could win the olympic gold at arrogance................

Sorry Emma. Speak as I find. I have always found them both to be most pleasant people. It is a shame you have found them otherwise. Next time I see you perhaps you will explain to me what happened to give you such a opinion as it's not like you to dislike people, generally you take everything in your stride.
 
Lock courtesy

I have just posted about a similar incident at Mapledurham on another thread. I am willing to accept that such things can happen as a result of a lack of thought or simple inattention and there are far more important things in life to worry about. There are of course those who just don't give a monkeys about others. Working out which camp they fall in is the tricky bit.

I like Chris's approach, relax and have another beer. My wife on the other hand could not help herself and made a loud comment. The only response she got was "write to the Prime Minister about it then!" which I thought was a pretty good answer really.

By the way Chris, I think you passed us coming out of Mapledurham or somewhere near there. Sorry I didn't wave. A simple lack of attention on my part.

I speak as I find as well.
I have been told off for the comments that I made but unlike you I have found them to be most unpleasant - I maybe should not say that on here for fear of another grilling but you know me and I do take a lot of things in my stride (more than most) but ..................
