Is the Nanni 200hp OK or not?

The trouble is that I am interested in the 8m single screw Jenneau Merry Fisher and nearly all of them appear to have the same power unit as this problem Bennie. Reading the auto threads there seems to be a problem with these Toyota blocks due to elevated EGT. There must be Forumites out there with long use experience with this engine and also experience with the distributors. Any comments as to whether these boats are lemons or not?

Seriously, mine has never missed a beat, ever. If you search the motoring forums, sure you'll find some reports of problems, but they made an awful lot of these engines. This was used in the Toyota Landcruiser and some of the trucks, legendary reliability.

I have a MF 805 and from all our research and working in motor trade I wouldn't have a prob buying a nanni, as said above land cruiser engine, and your all ways going to get a Friday afternoon motor some where ! Generally all jap engines are good.
Saying that mine has the Volvo 6cyl tamd41p motor in it and I love it to bits ! But didn't set out to buy 1 or other, went out to buy the right all round mf805, both are good power plants and as long as you have a good check round before buying should be fine.
As for the boats very good very practical turn on a six pence with a stable ride and have shaft drive reliability. Just make sure the one you buy has a bow thruster, because going a stern at slow speeds would be rather interesting and frustrating with out !!

lol Did think about one when we first got the boat, but by the time i got a price and debated if it was worth it, i'd gotten used to driving without one. You're right that they don't steer backwards very well, but you just work out how to get where you need to be with what you have.
 
Be aware that the same base block comes in different configurations and outputs so even if one model might have issues, it may very well not be the case for others. The engines are used for Landcuisers and a number industrial applications.

Think it is safe to say that the base is extremely reliable.

1KZ is the model name, other letters are added to designate various configs (mechanical, later on electronic, common rail etc.).
The 200 hp Nanni is Common Rail, the latest engine on that block.

The 1KD-FTV is a 3.0L (2982cc) has a variable geometry turbocharger and Intercooler. It has 16 valves and a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design.

Can't say if it affects reliability, but configs are not the same.

The one being discussed in this thread is the 4.390, based on the 1KZ-TE, not the common rail version.
