Morning/Afternoon All (delete as appropriate..)

Just thinking about an aux engine for our Sealine 220, but exactly how big should it be?? There are recommended sizes for powering a craft but little advice when it's use will be limited to 'getting you home'. I seem to recall Sealine quoting a max power for their bracket though - maybe 4hp??

I was thinking along the lines of a 5 or 8hp Honda (don't want both engines to break down!). The former might find use on a dinghy but would it be up to the job?

I presume long shaft would be preferable for the aux. I've no problems with it looking silly, but would there be any implications for an inflatable with a prop dangling three feet below the floor?!

Any words of wisdom welcomed as always.

Take care and enjoy the weekend

James

PS. Don't chandlery prices vary? Buying a set of coastal flares I found prices between £65 and £90 (same make). Drifted into Aladdins Cave at Swanwick - to you sir £50! Thanks lads (and lassy)

I've a 21 foot boat and use a 4hp on the bracket. I am lucky in the fact that I'm able to get away with a standard shaft, just. A lot will depend on the size/hieght/makeup of your platform etc. Has yours got the bracket/pad moulded into the platform or is it a bolt on jobby.

Re: get u home with dinghy

Steerage is the main problem. But even a knackered leg acts as a rudder. Also, sometimes you need power v quick but outboard is still on the dinghy.

if so, I think best way to use a small dinghy engine (with dinghy) to drive a much bigger boat is to position the dinghy alongside, and dinghy lashed fore and aft. This strange combo has quite reasonable steerage, dinghy driving "into" boat" and larger boat steering "into" dingy, adjust as needed. I moved a 45 foot boat with 8 hp outboard at a few knots (away from rocks) with this rig. So 4hp will be ok. Though bet it will be rubbish either at the stern (needs nearer 10 hp) or with dinghy towing (no chance)

When Stingray(21 foot) ran out of fuel recently, I was glad I had my trusty outboard(4hp) It got me home, just not very fast.

The outboard is mounted on a bracket that is spring assisted and drops into the water.

Pauline, as for your question well, it certainly wasn't for his good looks ;)

This is how the marinaros move boats around marinas also, open dory and 10hp ob they'll move pretty much anyhthing, although slowly.

Thank you'll for the replies so far.

Marrying MrB for his money would have been shallow Pauline - I'd never dream of it!

The bracket is actually moulded into the bathing platform so the outboard would sit quite low - am I right in thinking I should be able to get away with a standard shaft in this case??? (Fingers crossed)

Just for future reference, what are the pills your taking called. They seem remarkably effective. I could have done with some of those for a fiery red headed Irish lass I used to go out with

8hp

Big ones are better. 8hp will push it ok, 5hp will struggle and need to be run at full throttle. See post under Happy's thread on the same subject. I dont take much notice of manufacturer's recommendations about max hp for the bracket or whatever. You can normally exceed by a factor of 2 (unless you trail it by road, in which case be careful of the weight over bumps in the road). Just check it feels firm (ahem)

On the other hand, lifting 8hp onto a dinghy at sea will be tricky
