We bought Rival Spirit in 1994 for £32k and have spent several multiples of this restoring and maintaining her. Am I mad? Of course.

Please feel free to add your comments on this collective therapy thread..

No you're much too sensible to be mad, Rival Spirit is a fine craft for a stupid old git like you. It will protect you from the vagaries of the weather and bad chart reading, cR infringemennt were merely result in ships bouncing off your stout hull. Nope you're quite a sensible and handsome chap really .. erm you do still have some money lefyt do you. sweetie?

Blimey Chris, you could have bought a proper boat for that. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I bought a proper boat and then set about cutting chunks of it off and throwing them away, as well as drilling lightening holes to hang excess chandlery on.
My boat doubles as a caravan, therefore I consider myself 12% less loony than Mr E, but its a fine line.

Rationalising the cost of boat ownership is very dangerous, as it may result in selling up, and is to be avoided at all times. This is particularly true when faced with a big bill, or SWMBO is complaining about the adverse weather.

Sorry I can't explain myself further as it would involve analysis of the costs into logical chunks, and hence become a self fulfilling prophecy.

In the meantime, I will look forward to busking with you on Lymington High St - I can manage the skiffleboard, if it helps.

Funding boat ownership

I see you, Bignick, more as a mugger than a skiffleboarder. Chris_E on the other hand is nice enough to be a toyboy to some elderly blonde bimbo.

Re: Funding boat ownership

You will be pleased to hear theat you are not mad! Altough there is some risk.

In this country, if you have money you are Eccentric!

Its only when you run out of money that you become Mad!

So I guess Boat Ownership is a route into madness rather than madness itself.

Sane,quite sane.
The increase in life expectancy and the marine interest's positve contribution to the retardation of the onset of senility and I-remember-when lala land is available at a mere fraction of the value added to your home during the same time..some swimbos may need furthar convincing of course, particularly if home improvement and exotic holiday brochures start coming through the letterbox.

Cow hide

Don't be silly, TK is a cow watcher of international repute and lies in wait spying on them. He calls his spy place his "Cow Hide" ... we would tend to call it a manhole.

Trying to rationalise boating is the path to madness.

I've done numerous spreadsheets working out the budget all of them blown by something that needed doing. Even if you reach the nirvana of having done everything and you have ample spares it's sods law something else will fail or you'll spot a nice new shiny thing at the boat show.

No, I don't think about the money as everything I've invested in sailing has been worth it as I have many, many good memories and experiences that my family and I would never get otherwise.

What irritates me most is that everything I spend on the boat costs me double.

SWMBO works on the basis that if we can afford something on the boat, then we can afford the same amount on the house too.

Suppose I spend £300 on a new VHF, I would soon find a new pair of curtains hanging in the lounge or whatever ....
