to re-engine the boat whilst it will be out of the water, having the leg repaired??
i have been offered a ford transit engine (diesel) 2.5 ltr and can get the marinising kit locally at a sensible price, so what sort of horse power will a transit engine give me ? and would i need to upgrade the leg??? currently it's a volvo 270 leg
your thoughts please

What you suggest is feasible, Lancing Marine are the experts for advice onthis one.

However your not going to get much more that 70 horses out of the 2.5, and perhaps that would be a wise limit for the 270 leg.

Lancing do take that engine to 140hp ish, but by the time you've paid for all that, and a new leg, you may as well do the job right with new Merc 120 package, or even the new Volvo D3 perhaps.

If your happy to live life totally off the plane, then go ahead with the 2.5, although the smaller Ford engines may be a better fit in your boat and give as much power.

Perhaps it's also worth talking to Paul @ CoastalRides about a 4cyl Volvo option.

The price of the basic engine lump is only a minor part of the whole conversion job, so don't push yourself down the Tranny route just 'cos it was an offer you couldn't refuse (all IMHO!)

You've got the AQ130. Depending on what model,ie, A,B,C or D, then you've got 130hp on tap. Well you did have when it was new, so a conservative figure will be around the 115 mark. Depending on what Trannie lump it is, the power will be from somewhere like 70hp or if its the FSD turbo your looking at 100hp. The latest twin cam turbo job will give you in the region of 140 odd hp.

Seen the swap done many times. The quickest was 7 days from haul out to re launch. Its all the niggly bits that can take the time, fuel returns and stuff like that. Seeing as you've spent a bundle on your lump, would it not just be wiser to get the leg sorted and carry on using the thing for a while. Then if you want to keep the boat for a while Consider it over a winter layup period so the boat is useable when the family wants to use it.

Get the lump and kit if its not too expensive, you can always get your money back by selling it if your not gonna use it. The 270 leg should take all but the latest trannie lump outputs. What ratio is it? At the very least you'll be looking to change the prop size. The leg needs looking at now from the latest mishap, it happens to us all, so get that done and look at doing it while its out. Theres a few companies about that do the kits. I've found that most will give advise quiet freely.

Reckon that an incautious match might be better and claim on the insurance..... Its definately jinxed!!

FWIW now youve spent a fortune on the petrol yd be better off keeping it , at least for a while.

If u do decide to go diesel, talk to Mike Bellamy at Lancing, or give me a ring.
