Almost certainly not. If we were sensible we would not willingly go out on bumpy water in the liquid sunshine that passes for summer in this country, pay enormous amounts of money for boat upkeep and insurance and all those need-to-have goodies, and even more money on antifouling that the boat washes off as it goes through the water. On the other hand there is nothing better on a bank holiday than lying down on the boat deck in peace and tranquility and thinking about those traffic jams from all the caravanners trying to enjoy their own holiday.
Who cares if it is sensible or stupid, I need my boating fix.

Financially no. Whatever you imagine it is going to cost, or however many spreadsheets you prepare before you buy it is ALWAYS more expensive. I do not believe that "true" value for money exists in the UK pleasure boat market.

That said, for me the real benefit from boat ownership is the relaxation and peace of mind it brings. No matter how bad things have gone in the week, when I pull up in the marina carpark on a Friday night the cares of the world disappear. For this reason alone boat ownership makes absolute sense to me.

but take this in context... reading thu' the post... most of you do it "properly" with proper (new or brokerage) boats, me?

i do it in cheap, nasty mend it and make do boats... but i do get satisfaction out of it. relaxation?, nope it normally causes stress beyond belief. cost me loads of cash (and i mean cash, not money!)

will it help me to live longer? i bloody well hope not!! but it's just one of those things that just has to be done when living on the coast.

and just when i get a boat up together, so that i can just use her..... what do i do sell her!!! and start all over again.

and i thought pilchard was the name of a fish!!

and as for the terms boat owner and responsible..... look up oxymoron in the dictionary... just to see what it says.

cor !! you rich bugger!!! got money lying around on the floor!!! I just finished ripping the sofa and armchairs apart looking for some of that stuff,coz I read a letter today from Mr Visa ,that said it was on the endangered list, and possibly extinct in my area!!!!!!!!!

...a caravan!

I made a comparison after my sister came back from her holidays, again on the discussion that boating is frightfully expensive. BTW: my sister took the caravan to the coast.

I pay 250€, all-in for the boat. Beat that.

Standing fees Blankenberge, 1 car, family of 4: 12.50€+3.50€+4x4€, a whopping 32€ a night
Mooring fees Blankenberge= 12€, parking is free for berth holders.

Fuel is less than what the car uses, AND it is red petrol.

The Caravan beats me hands down on maintenance time and costs, thats true. But I don't need MOT, thank god.

Oh and, if you meet a nice lass at the bar, what's going to work: inviting here back on the yacht for a drink or back to the caravan for a drink?
