Is it OK to turn in the river near moorings ??

Today I past a morring site going up stream - turned round in the river, went past the mooring spot turned againn and then came in on the mooring going up river.

was told very nicely by a guy who morrs there that that is "not done" - should have gone PAST the morrings in BOTH directions before turning. Is this right ??

How can you go PAST the moorings in BOTH directions before turning?

Not one that I know about!
I moor on the Frome and turn in the first convenient vacant mooring slot I find.

utter rubbish.... but then it does depend on what you turned into /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

To put it simply /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif
- came along moorings looking for spot
- found one but too late to stop so past it
- guy reckons I had to go to end of the moorings before turning
- then come the whole length of the moorings before turning again
- to arrive back at the mooring spot going upstream

he quoted "rule of the road" and RYA regulation !!!

If busy day and good spot.will go in any which way front -side -reverse-whatever.Provided not causing major problems or distress to existing mooree,s.

Dunno what he's gibbering about. Sounds to me that you did EXACTLY the right thing especially mooring into the stream.

The post script to this was that a boat turning in the river near his moored boat got his throttle stuck (??) and collided into the back of his boat.

When we came out of the mooring and went to the slipway I DID go past the end of the moored boats before turning - No point in winding him up !!

I wasn't aware the RYA could make rules up like that. Which then should take presidence? Col reggs, local bye laws or teh RYA regs?

I saw bnothing on the RYA website about any rules, other than those that apply to members and to class/racing rules,

Skimming through the colregs I couldn't see anything at all about mooring, and the word turning only appears once.

Sound like he was talking from his rear end.

Thats what I thought! Just hope he doesn't turn and shout with it, it might make a mess.

Obstruction is the only issue I can see here. But it depends on the byelaws of the water authority, I would have thought. Can't see the Sandra did anything wrong in this instance. I have to do it all the time on the Wareham river which has trots more or less its length from the NRA boathouse down to its limit with Poole harbour.
