I'm selling my Contessa 26 so thought it would be a good idea to get the Stowe speed/log working. Whoever fitted it cut the cable at the paddle wheel end and connected it up with chocolate block. Over the years the water has got in and rotted the wires.
So I think have a look on ebay, great there's a speed/log instrument with all the bits for sale, but the guy is asking £110 + postage!
A brand new replacement is only £136 (NASA Clipper), have I missed something?
If I have stuff like this that I don't want and know it is of use to someone I give it away, while I don't expect strangers to be as benevolent to me surely this is ridiculous.

Belive me, I use Ebay a lot for selling but hardly ever for buying. Too many people with too much money and not enough knowledge push the prices beyond retail quite often.

I sold a 6month old laptop for £21 more than I paid for it and £48 more than current price. Wanted to buy a cheap ink cartridge last weekend but some "idiot" spoilt it all by bidding £24+ postage when I can buy locally for £23.99.!!

Try www.boatsandoutboards.com a bit slower to use but you tend to get better bargains there!

I'd agree there. There may even be some malicious bidding there as well.

Real life auctions can be the same. I once bid on a technical camera I didn't really want because the guy who started bidding for it was generally disliked. I dropped out after pushing up the bids by about £300.
On e-bay however someone could open an account spuriously purely to bid up items (perhaps their own) and then disappear.

Make him an offer. Point out the retail price new and the guarantee that goes with it. Also point out that you ain't expecting to pay the VAT component that goes with a retail sale to a private seller on eBay. Point out his postage overhead vis you buying it retail.
Finally point him to this thread /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If it's just the cable that is wrong it may be worth sending it back to the manufacturers and asking them to repair it.
It's worth a phone call anyway.

Agree with Willow ... I was following a used JRC 1000 Radar - old model on E-Bay. It sold for well over £400 + delivery - I bought the new model for £499 at the LBS this year. Lucky seller !!!!!!!!!!!?????????

Stowe paddle unit may be smaller in diameter and you may have to drill larger hole for NASSA skin fitting. I found this when I replaced Stowe log for NASSA. Stowe no longer in business and firm that makes replacements very expensive the replacement part I needed was moe expensive than whole NASSA system. Fitting in a section of screened cable will be cheaper.

These days you have to register a credit card that relates to the address on your Ebay sellers application. ore and more difficult to hide now.
