I a word nothing really offends me, but the forum has got a bit dull, not a lot of boaty things happening :-(

Should I therefore induce a fault into my perfectly working engine and boat so it can be posted up for helpful advise :) what do you think?

Here's to a good healthy two days of boating that could hopefully bring up some more interesting posts.

Whats up chuck?
I haven't seen much that is different - the ym and pbo flora seem quite focussed at the moment on boaty issues - this one seems to have its usual mixture which we can all scan and move on if we don't like it. The Reefer Jacket thread in the clubroom raised the question of getting people exterminated from the forum - I thought it would have run on a fair bit more if it had been here.
Oh well seems like a wet weekend forecast - Oh God, I'm talking about the weather, time to go!!

Must admit things seem a little slow, but maybe it's the time of the year, everybody getting ready for the "season" etc. I know I'm at a fairly low ebb, can't wait to get home and get gone, but I've another 19 days!!! Weather is still crap out here, but always is! the well is playing up and gebnerally things are shit at the moment, I need cheering up!! Nothin' like a good slanging match to liven the spirits! Or a bottle of malt!

I can whinge at length about the List LH4 in my ragpot. Bought the boat about 2 months ago and the engine hasn't run, first cos dopey delivery skipper left batteries on, then found out starter motor was on its last legs. Took that out and had Lucas re con it. Also had an engineer connect up new cables and anew switch. Bought 2 200 amp batteries to help turn the thing, and nothing..

The engineer strted sucking teeth, muttering about starter getting too hot and words like partial seizure and rebuilds or replacement engines.

Anyway a collegues boyfriend is a mechanic, for Lotus but.. anyway we stripped off the injectors, cranked tehe ngine sprayed diesel all over the pilot house and filled the area with white smoke... But it back together, cranked it and it leapt into life... I was so stunned I almost forgot to turn the cooling water seacock on.. Anyway in future will go with Lotus mechanic at 2 beers an hour than marine engineer at £30.

Nest question... fitting a calorifier.. anyone done it with an old Lister? Is it easy for a relative (well complete) engine dummy to install? Does the water get hot enough?

If the engine is pure raw water cooled, ie. no heat exchanger, the water barely gets hot enough, to heat a calorifier, but it is possible, you need to tap off from twhere the water is injected into the exhaust manifold, thats where its at its hottest and run through the calorifier, I'm sure somewhere there is a book all about this stuff, one of the other guys will enlighten you I'm sure. Lister may be able to help you with this aswell. If its heat exchanger cooled, it will be even simpler, as the water is fresh for a start and hotter, the engine may even have a special take-off place, again Lister will I'm sure help you. Good luck. By the way, the problem you had is called a "hydrostatic lock" it's fooled quite a few into thinking their engine was siezed, but not many "mechanics" who should have checked that!

Re: Pah!

I've been quite *nice* to you! Anyway, I'm grumpy about your new new signature which says "the fairytale ends here", not conducive to an ongoing and extended slanging er conversation. I'd also like to say that I'm on that virtual train that you sometimes dash off to catch - and I've made special arangements for it to leave early! Tee hee.

It runs through a heat exchanger.. So its nice an easy. Good. I will lay off calling Lister for a day or two, cos I called them yesterday in a panic following marine engineer's visit! Must admit it was terribly satisfying to hear the thing rumbling away, especially after helping to fix it with own two hands. The feeling of achievement for me is half the pleasure of owning a boat. The afty cabin is coming on a treat too once all the old crappy ply was ripped out and some nice pine slats fashioned to replace the tongue and groove berth and seat tops.

next job is to soundproof the engine room and maybe get the boat out of the canal and onto the sea for a shake down.

Thanks for the advice!

RE: fitting a calorifier

This was the subject of an article in POB (I think) around Oct 2001. It looked fairly straight forward although it always does. From memory they used a standard central heating hot water tank and plumbed it into the heater hose outlets from the cylinder head. They plumbed it up using plastic piping like Polyplumb which made threading the pipes around the various obstructions easy which form experience is the hardest bit of any household type plumbing. I'll see if I can't dig the mag out this weekend for you.

Re: RE: fitting a calorifier

Depends on what you mean by 'standard central heating hot water tank'. Ordinary domestic copper hot water cylinders are designed to be vented to atmosphere ie they operate at (about) atmospheric pressure and as a result are built out of the thinest possible sheeting. Most boat systems on the other hand are pressurised. You can guess the rest!!

Re: RE: fitting a calorifier

You could be right, like I say it's a good while since I read the piece. But am I wrong in thinking that there are domestic hot water system cylinders that are made for pressurised hot water?

Yes you can edit files using vi but you can also play tennis with a cricket bat.

what content do you find objectionable. Other boards that i visit have a warning that there may be some strong content. Lets face it this forum is quiet tame really, you get stronger language and topics down at my local bowls green!!

Re: which ones?

Now look here - that medication is expensive and as an N.I. contributor I really must insist that you take the prescribed dose each day - its so obvious when you miss one - all that calmness goes, now are we going to be a good little chap or do we have to send for nurse?
