Seen them a few times years ago on gen sets, big pumps, dumpers and other plant and they were surprising effective - wind it up a lot of turns, hit the lever, repeat until it starts

Quite commonly used in offshore equipment where electric cant be used, had a Ford 2.5 in at work last year with one fitted, was interesting to see working.

CAV spring starter was a 1950's innovation which works real well. Sadly once Delphi got the wrecking ball into the Lucas CAV empire the spring starter business went up for grabs.

Kineteko purchased the business now trading as http://springstarter.com/ however units far more expensive than they used to be. If you go into Kineteko site you will be surprised at the number of applications however to be really useful you need a dual SAE starter aperture flywheel housing.

Cummins used to offer a a dual aperture SAE 3 flywheel housing for the B Series and I know of a sand dredger with a 6BG1 genny which has this option, you can go on board dead ship, with no shore power, fire up the genny and within half an hour you can have the main engines running.

Similar idea is fitted to agricultural machines being refurbished for export to under developed regions, where they do not understand or have the ability to maintain / repair electrics.
