the Russians had something like that in the 1950s but on a massive scale. about 50 mts long that rode on a ground effect only 2 mtrs above the waves, they desighed it for quick troop movements.

im sure something like this new one on a bigger scale would be widely used for ferries across the solent etc

The Ekranoplan, or the Caspian Sea Monster ground effect plane.

Slightly different concept as the Ekranoplan leaves the water completely, whereas this thing still has two legs and the prop in the water.
 
That is an excellent idea.

Things like this will become more appealing I expect as fuel goes up in price, would be nice to see some non-white slab sided vessels around...

Added to which, no matter how much you spend on your Sunseeker or similar, showing up in one of these is going to draw the crowds more!
