Is impellor replacement a \'boat out\' job

I have a Sealine S37 with twin KAD 43's
Is an impellor change a 'boat out' job or can I do it in the water without sinking the boat. I guess the engine position is similar to same size Princess and Fairline so answers welcome from all sources.

HUH! The impellors on your engines can be easily changed and there is no question of having your boat out.

But perhaps close the sea cock, just to be on the safe side.

You should definitely be able to change the impellor in the water. I would add that if there is not a seacock to shut off the raw water intake you should consider lifting the boat out and fitting one.

Jesus! Listen! YOU DON'T NEED TO TAKE YOUR BOAT OUT OF THE WATER TO CHANGE THE IMPELLORS!
If you did then how would you deal with a busted one when half way across the Channel?

Byron
I did actually hear you the first time. You probably didn't notice but the debate changed to the fitting of sea cocks on stern drives which if possible is a sensible idea.

Don't bother with seacocks. The pipe from the sterdrive, where it comes into the boat, is above the boats water line. Or it should be. The only engine set up on sterndrives, that I ve seen, with a sea cock is the Yanmar/bravo3 set up.

Lets put it another way. If they were needed the makers would have fitted them.

Sorry! However! Why would you wish to fit sea cocks to a stern drive? Think about it, stern drives are underwater anyway, to fit sea cocks would just make the opportunity to accidentally leave them off. If the manufacturers thought it was a good idea it would be built into the design.

Ahem ! Seacocks also fitted to 4.2L Mercruiser engines with bravo drives and I think on the smaller Mercruiser diesels too

The pipe from the drive is below the waterline as is the strainer so a seacock is essential. I'm sure on other Sealine S37's I've seen with Volvo drives the whole drive is below the water line so the water intake pipe coming from the drive on the inside of the transom shield must also be below the water line !

Don't volvos have the strainer mounted above the water line which would remove the need for a seacock ?

Re stern drive seacocks

An interesting point.....as BarryH knows my Yanmar BIII has both a direct pick up (with seacock) and a feed from the drive.
Following the conversion to submarine and associated discussions one of the 'recomendations' made by the loss adjuster was that I fit a seacock to the drive intake, just in case...... The response from everyone else was 'don't', it's not normal and someone, sometime will forget to open it and you can say goodbye to the drive, forget the warranty etc etc I went back to the brokers and advised them of this( and the abortive non return valves I had fitted to the cockpit drains that stopped water getting out fast enough!) and they just smiled and said fine, only his recommendations anyway!

As I said " ones that I've see". As for volvo's. Stainless pipe off the inside of the drive runs up above W/L level.

Diesels don't have that stainless tube, and there is a sea cock (of sorts) on the port side of the transom shield about 3/4 of the way up. If they're anything like mine they are seized solid. An no you don't need to turn them off to change impellor. You can in fact remove entire raw water pump while afloat and it won't take on water..
