I’ve started back fishing over the last couple of weeks particularly trolling. I’ve missed trolling for the last few years because my previous boat was just too fast at minimum speed. I’ve caught a good few Mahi-Mahi, Bonito and Baracuda. I don’t much care for Bonito or Mahi-Mahi as I don’t like dark flesh fish and they both bleed like pigs and make a mess of the boat. My luck changed yesterday and I got 2 nice Dentex - the bigest one was almost 3Kg and gave me good sport. We had it for dinner this evening and it was delicious.
Anyone else fishing?
 
Not me. If I dangled a line from the boat it would end up on concrete, and anyway I've never caught anything more exciting than mackerel. The first time I went to Istanbul I bought some grilled fish in bread from a vendor near the Galata bridge. It was possibly the fishiest fish I have ever had and delicious. I think it was called 'bluefish'.

Bluefish are called Lüfer in Turkish. Absolutely delicious. We catch them in my area for around 2 weeks in autumn as they migrate south. They are voracious and will take almost anything when they're feeding but strips of fresh fish are best especially barracuda. Tricky buggers to unhook and they've been known to do fair damage to fingers.
 
First Mate and I are leaving Wednesday late PM for Wellington. Should arrive Friday.

Fishing in Wellington Harbour and the Cook Staight is very good.

Looking forward to hooking Kahawai, Yellowtail Kingfish and Blue cod. I cought two Trevally last year also.

I had one of those so-called fishermen types as crew during the summer. We trailed a line for most of the 5 day trip from upper Clyde to Londonderry but we didn’t even catch seaweed. I saw this as a good outcome as 1) I don’t think he’d have known what to do next, and 2) I would not have been amused if my deck became blood soaked. Fishing from a sailboat remains a myth, imho, of course!

Definitely agree that fishing on passage is mostly a waste of time. Speed and depth of the lure are essential. You might strike it lucky and hook a Tuna at 5/6 Knts but more likely not. I hope you enjoyed Derry.
 
I find fishing almost as exciting as waiting for paint to dry!

I have a few pals that come on board and one fishes with a paravane and the other dispatches and guts them with almost zero blood. Stick your fingers in the gills, snap the head back and then pull the guts out. Simples.

Nothing quite like fresh fish for supper.

This applies to Greece but may work in your area, take a long length of brightly coloured wool or cotton, wrap it around your hand and tie it off so it forms a loop, find a fish farm and tie the loop onto the end of a line (no weight) troll the line past the fish farm and you will catch lots of Garfish, (they strike the loop and cannot let go) put the small ones in a coolbox full of water, you now have your livebait. connect the livebait with two hooks, carefully so it can still swim, at least a 30ft long trace, then a detachable lead weight, you can buy clip ons or use a safety pin, start to troll VERY slowly, less than 1 knot, in 20/30 meters of water, it can work very well, of course i could be telling my granddad how to suck eggs:D

Last saturday the wife ran out of the fish & chip shop saying "go go" she lobbed a bag through the window of the car, jumped in the driving seat & off we went. I caught 3 fried Haddock 2 picked onions & 3 large portions of chips.
All without a net or a line.
Tasted great.
My kind of fishing :encouragement:
 
I would like to have a lobster pot to heel over the side after the anchor. Can any of you fishermen recommend a neat, perhaps foldable one please? This would be for use on Scottish West coast.
 
While wandering in the Outer Sporadies, I thought a bit of fishing might be an idea. So bought some tackle and tried spinning. Hooked a small mackeral and pulled it in.. The ladies were a bit appauled at this gross slaughter, but it managed to slip the hook, just as I was getting it on board. So, all parties satisfied. I caught one, but nobody had to see it bludgened to death and turn up on the table.

I was racing on a coastal point to point race with my BIL as crew. He is a keen fisherman rather than sailor, and wanted to tow a lure during the 12 NM spinnaker run.
We were racing neck and neck witha competitor. I told him he could, but if he hooked a fish i wasn't coming about for him.
Sailing at a steady 8 - 10 knots he hooked a good Kahawai! I remained true to my word and he manfully reeled it in while we continued at full speed.
He got his fish and we won the race by about 90 seconds, so we were both satisfied!
 
I spent 5 hours trolling yesterday in an area where I often catch sea bass but I got nothing. Despite that I had a wonderful day. I just love the solitude and the sounds of the sea.
