Is a similar age Squadron 58 worth £100K more than a Squadron 55?

Reduced 2011 Fairline Squadron 58 - Boats.co.uk

For Sale 2010 Fairline Squadron 55 - Boats.co.uk

2010 year Sq 55 vs 2011 Sq58. I am only at an early stage of researching these boats but I gather from a post by JFM a while back and a video from YBW that the only difference between the two models is a longer bathing platform although I can see the transom looks different on the 58 (cool slopey windows).

Is the interior and the flybridge on the 55 exactly the same as the 58 or am I missing something? So is there a good reason that, in the examples above, the 58 is £100K more than the 55?

I don’t know. I would think they are not the same but have never looked.
However.. the 55 in the pic has the early helm electronic control ( centre consol thing ) and that was known to give no end of issues and I am not sure if it is still supported.

on the newer ones they used eplex and on our65 there were regular replacement modules required. My ex sold it a few months ago and the last bill was for £2k more of modules.

Condition can make a huge difference to value, and that is something that is hard to ascertain through photos (they all look great on web sites!) If you visited both boats, it's possible you might spot immediately £100K of difference if one is fairly average and the other absolutely pin sharp perfect.

I have owned both a newer version Squadron 55 and Squadron 58.

Both great boats and the differences are that the swim platform is longer on the 58 and has the tender lift and launch system and the squared windows. The Squadron 60 had an even longer platform and the bed in the master cabin was turned around.

Look at the gelcoat up close and personal, my 58 had bubbles that showed as small pinpricks - the gel was overheated at a build time and it created an aero bar effect. Asked around and was told that a lot were like this. No one gave me a pointer as to how to fix it so I sold the boat and purchased a Princess.

The original control system was a train wreck and should have been replaced. As Jrudge says an expensive system when it goes wrong and cuts out whole sections of the boat.

Noticed that the 55 advertised has D12 800 and the 58 D13 800 - I had D13 900 in my 55 and D13 800 in my 58 - the 55 performed far better and mid season the 58 was a bit tardy.

Any questions, please let me know - have all the invoices etc to hand.

Thanks for your detailed reply.

So it seems that the interiors are the same on the 55 and the 58. I don't think the extra length on the bathing platform out weighs the 100k difference and the probable reduction in berthing fees.

The 55 is showing as 5.05 wide but the 58 is narrower. This is the same across several ads.
Odd that the longer boat is narrower.
More than likely a mistake, no matter how recurrent.
Aside from the fact that it would be madness to build two completely different moulds for such similar boats, the 55 beam is 4.80 according to MBY test.

If you want a second pair of eyes to look over both boats, happy to join you, I know the team at boats.co.uk very well having had 5 new boats off them.
They have always looked after me even when the SQ55 was out of warranty.

Thank you Andrew, that is a very kind offer. I know Nick quite well but he seems to have buggered off to the Caribbean. It would mean a trip to Mallorca or Spain to view them though. Tough gig!

I have my 60 for sale and had an interested buyer but they were prepared to pay an extra £200k for 2 year newer boat same model a 60 which I thought was mad but then that's what happens when the buyer decides they want one particular boat!

I looked at the 55 and 58 before I went for the 60 and each were nice but in end preferred the newer boat and wanted the extend platform which was high low rather than the lifting types on the other 2 boats.

Good point but I managed to get the price out of the dealer as he had mine for sale in a different office and we wanted to see if the price was realistic which it was when compared to the newer more expensive boat, I could not believe it myself as it was the same model boat but just newer, when I looked at the 55 and 58 they were different models so you would expect to pay more for the newer model as above and they were about £80k difference between the models around 4 years ago between the 55 and 58 but the 100K for a 3 year newer boat with better spec lower hours and a newer model seem to be worth it to me!
By the way Happy new year JR.
