Is 4 foot worth £40k

Same manufacturer , same engines ,same amount of cabins and heads , so is the extra cat swinging space worth it ?

I dont think it's worth it, esp as the 38 is 2yrs* newer. The 42 looks a bit overpriced. But if those are the prices, I'd say that while the 42 has all round a bit more space, it's not THAT much more, and the capability of the 2 boats in terms of passagemaking, beds, and when you can/can't leave port is very similar, so I'd keep the £40k and get the ph38. Both look nice examples

*The ph42 is mis-described. It's a 1998, not a 1999. If it was 1999 it would have the new shaped saloon windows

If you are interested in ph42 there are pics on John10056's thread

Depends on how you look at it,

42 is 13,400 kg for £185K = £13.81 per kg displaced

38 is 10,400 kg for 145K = £13.94 per kg

So the 42 is better value!!!

Will that be enough to convince SWMBO?

I ve often wondered were they get the price from for an extra couple of ft, inmo i would pocket the 40k it will pay for your boating for a couple of years and the ph38 looks a better buy

Well SWMBO and the kids are saying 42 and my wallet is saying 38 . BTW JFM thanks for all the info you have posted , all really informative .

I really cant see what you gain by buying the 42 out of those two boats. Both have two ensuite heads, both with sperate shower in the main and a compromised wet room in the second. Both have decent sized cabins, both have a good sized saloon.

Ive not been on a 42, but I have been on a 38 in some pretty horrible weather and she always handled it well.

and, in my opinion for UK boating the 38 has a vastly better fly brige, with three seperate seats up front and a big seating area aft big enough four 6 to sit and 4 to dine. The 42 has a tighter two person bench and a sunpad area which will never be used in the UK.

Plus, as JFM points out the 42 is the pre-facelift boat so the 38 will age better, but again I guess that is opinion.

I think the real thing here is that 42 is way to much money (especially since the Generator and/or paserelle doesnt work and the nav gear all seems a bit noddy for a boat of that size). You can just about get a Phantom 40 for £200k.

Of those two, go for the 38. Its the better boat, and what is more its going to cost less to moor, has better more modern Nav gear and you have 40k in your back pocket...

Asking versus selling?

The £35k difference is on asking price, and that isn't what you'll pay (though if you will, give me a call in a couple of years when I have a boat to sell).

If the 38 guy will take 10% less, and the 42 chap suspects he is over-priced and agrees 15% off when you push, the difference would be more like £15k (though my maths isn't a strong point).

My experience just recently BTW is that offering what you think is a fair price for a boat you think overpriced is a slow burn. Brokers for owners who rejected deals ring back a week or two later and say "Are you still interested, shall we talk?". Lesson seems to be to make the offer, accept they'll say no, then wait and see if they come back. Assumes you are willing to sit back and see what happens of course!

Just a thought

Yup, I'd say every word of that is right that Jez. Logically the choice is better looked at as the 38 or a new-model ph40 (if they are £200k). The ph40new is a significant step up in terms of space; 2 pretty good shower rooms, it'll have modern nav kit, etc. At least the extra £50k then feels justified and will mostly be got back on resale

Peterandjeanette on here has a ph40new (I think, or is it a 43?) so can advise on that boat

Each to their own though. It's great Bamboleo how all us folks on the 'net tell you how to spend your £40-£50k :-) Good luck anyway

Thanks for all the advise guys , you have all pretty much confirmed what i had been thinking . Another point may be that the smaller boat should be more economical and slightly faster ( allways nice):)

Length isn't everything, as they say. With boats, the amount of space you get inside is as much a function of the beam as the length. The P38 is an excellent boat but it's a foot or so narrower. Doesn't sound much but it makes a difference. The extra feet in waterline length of the P42 and the extra weight will certainly make a difference at sea. It should deal with a head sea better than the P38. As has already been pointed out, asking prices are no indication of selling price. The difference might be a lot less after negotiation
