Is 35hp enough for a Picton Delta?

Hello all, this is my first post here. I'm looking at buying a small, cheap speedboat. Nothing to fancy, as I live in the Midlands but speed a couple of weeks in Torbay every year, where I intend to use the boat.

I have found a Picton Delta with a 35hp Johnson. Is this going to be fast enough to get the boat onto the plane with a couple/few people riding? Also, would it be any good for waterskiing, or just pulling a ringo? I realise it's going to be close to the smallest I could get away with.

My first choice would be a Fletcher Arrowflyte, but the Delta seems to look quite similar. My budget is 1.5k.

Does anyone have any experience with this boat? Any advice appreciated.

I don't know the Picton Delta, but I think you can only drive it seated? I question the suitability of any small fast boat that you can't drive standing up for sea use, it's just too much punishment on your back.

Why not consider a RIB instead, I think you'll get more use out of it in Brixham.

35 horses won't make is blisteringly quick. It should get on the plane with 2 onboard but will take time, especially as it won't have any power trim. For pulling a skier I think your being a bit ambitious there, maybe the ringo will be a bit much too.
Seeing as most of the money in a sportboat outfit is in the engine and the 35 horse Johnson is a fairly old lump I'd look to be paying a hell of a lot less than 1.5k for it.........

The Picton delta is a good boat. quite beamy, good hull and good performance. however a 50hp is a minimum on that if you want to do sports. the Delta normally came with a 60hp on it but many upgraded to a 75hp.

cheers and welcome

We learnt to ski on a Dolphin 16 powered by a 33hp evinrude (a long long time ago) It can be done but I suspect the 35 will be a bit of a struggle and you'll very soon wish you had another 20 odd horses to push you along, especially if you weigh more than 10 stone apiece ! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well I think the food I ate over Christmas weighs 10 stone alone, so I'd better go for something a bit bigger /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My Dad learnt to waterski on a Shetland 535 with a 50hp Merc back in the oldern days, and I imagine a Shetland is a fair bit heavier than the boats I'm looking at, so I think 50hp should easily be enough if I can find one.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I think you'd find a 535 with a 50hp+ on it for less than £1500 at the moment - try eBay or similar

I found these:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DRIVER-560-MERCURY...A1%7C240%3A1318 ---- £680 at time of post - will go over budget though I fear!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Speedboat-126-Broo...A1%7C240%3A1318 -- Only 5hrs to go - £580 at the moment and that means you could take off the engine, sell it and repower all for under £1500

Or this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Speed-Boat-engine-...A1%7C240%3A1318 - 50hp on a light boat - £620 at time of post

or this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Speed-Boat-engine-...A1%7C240%3A1318

you get the picture...

Hi
I have a picton delta with a 20hp johnson , i was with my friend in the boat,
Our speed was 30km/h and also got in plane very quickly
That johnson was a short shaft and my boat requires a long shaft.
I now buyed 25hp yamaha longshaft , so it is also importent if you have a long or short shaft

Hi

This thread is more than 5 years old. Presume the OP has found a solution long ago, so do not expect a lot of response to this :)
