Irresponsible but time to donate, it is Christmas after all !

Why irresponsible? People have always challenged themselves against the elements, and these guys made their own safety arrangements (two supporting boats). I'd applaud them if they'd done it just for the hell of it, I applaud them even more doing it for such a worthy charity. We're becoming pre-conditioned to think that you can't be adventurous without being reckless, and that risk is always to be avoided. Keep the human spirit alive!

Because they're flying the Pilot Jack from the stern! (3:20 into the vid).

With respect that is not a Pilot Jack (Union flag with white border), it is a union flag - admittedly not correct either, but what the hell !!

[pedant mode on]

"Union Jack" is so called because it is flown from the stem (on the Jackstaff) of naval vessels, the "Pilot Jack" is the equivalent (as described above) flown from the stem of civilian vessels, at other times the correct description of the national flag is the "Union Flag" although the term "Union Jack" has become synonymous.

[pedant mode off]

Good luck to them for their support of Help for Heroes - a great cause.

Tom
(slightly biased as son pilots helicopters that sometimes have to pick up the people who, perhaps later, may need the help of that charity)

Why irresponsible?
Hi Nick,

They have my respect, I was just trying to get a worthy cause a bit of extra publicity in my usual clumsy way, if I hadnt mentioned the irresponsible element I am sure someone else would have done, I have to agree with you that arranging their own support vessels and not relying on a Royal Navy Frigate to bail them out like many sailing 'heroes' was also admirable.

Cheers
Pete
