I'm organising a looney dook and need to decided whether to do it in the sea at Rockcliffe (only practical near high tide) or in Loch Ken (very, very cold). No tide tables to hand. Could anyone better equipped let me know the times of high tide for Hestan Island, or Liverpool, on new year's day?

I used google to find out what a looney dook is. Im fairly certain you can use the same thing for tides.....:)

As I said, lots of hits but by the time I had tried eight which only gave five or seven days ahead I thought I'd ask. Hmm. Dead low tide at 2pm, which means the sea will be around a 30 minute walk from the top of the beach. Looks like Loch Ken, which is easy but quite astonishingly cold at that time of year.

Sounds adventurous. lots of pink walnut whip lookalikes.......:ambivalence:

When we do it in Loch Ken everyone wears wetsuits. It's actually a river, and in mid winter a substantial part of the water has derived from snow melt. The Irish Sea is typically about 8oC at New Year while Loch Ken was less than 4oC last time we used it. I am assured by those who do it - I. alas, must remain ashore in a supervisory role - than even in a wetsuit the experience is breathtaking.

If you have Navionics you can change the date on your device and it will display the following week or so of tides when opened. If you use iPlayer or other date sensitive apps make sure they're not running or all the downloads will be deleted, I can assure you!
