This season I'd like to do some offshore races in the Irish Sea. I hear rumours of the following:

Round Anglesey race
Round Isle of Man Race
Liverpool to Howth

There appear to be no websites for these and other website references are several years out of date. Do they still take place?

Also the apparently mythical ISORA? Can only find references to boats having taken part in races several years ago.

#####

Round Anglesey is run by, I think, Holyhead SC - run the narrowest and nastiest part of the Menai Straits at dead Low Water then sail all the way round Anglesey, finish off Menai Bridge and party at the Victoria Hotel.

Round IOM used to be run, I think, by IOMYC at Douglas.

- neither of these is recognised by the RORC as a major race, so don't expect any mentions on their web site.

Liverpool - Howth is strictly speaking the Lyver Trophy, run by Liverpool Yacht Club, "http:/www.lyc.org.uk/" in Fastnet (i.e. odd-numbered) years as the Irish Sea qualifying race for the Fastnet.

- you have forgotten....

Tranmere - Douglas "The Midnight Race" run by, wudjableevit, Tranmere SC
Liverpool - Conway? "Lamb's Offshore Trophy" run by LYC
Wallassey - Beaumaris (Wallassey SC?)

Check with the Liverpool Bay Sailing Association for details.

26th June is the Round Ireland Race (organised by RORC/ Wicklow Sailing Club), starts finishes in Wicklow. About 'Fastnet' sized in length, so takes 5 days or so.

See rorc or Wicklow Sailing Club websites.

Some dates

Tranmere - Douglas (IOM) - Friday 11 June 2004.
Get there a week early, blag your way into the Sunday club race at Liverpool YC [you shouldn't be allowed to do this but if you're keen the Commodore, Vice, Rear and Racing Captain are all decent guys who'll bend the rules] to experience a full tide running Mersey start! Then send you entire crew for counselling. Usual highlight of the party at Douglas is the presentation of a fraternal letter from the Lord Mayor of Liverpool to the Mayor of Douglas who promptly gets "tired and emotional" and has to be carried back to the Mayoral limo.

Then cruise back to Liverpool for the River Festival - free berthing, four nights' serious alcohol abuse, salsa dancing, clubbing, 2 regattas and some nice prizes.

Round Anglesey 31/07/04.

Piel Island Race 28/08/03: Liverpool - Piel (off Barrow-in-Furness)

If you need a main trimmer or spare helmsman, send me a PM. I wasn't planning to do any racing this year and haven't renewed my LYC membership, but I could be tempted out of retirement :)

The provisional sailing programme 2004 for the Irish Sea Offshore Racing Association (ISORA) is as follows:

-Race2 - May 22nd - Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire
-Race3 - July 31st - Arklow to Pwllheli
-Race4 - August 28th - Abersoch to Howth

All the races are at the weekend and I will keep you posted of any changes.

The Round Ireland Race starts on June 26th from Wicklow and finishes back at Wicklow. See Wicklow Sailing Club for more details.

Happy sailing,

Olly

Sorry: only just noticed your post, but still wonder why the organisers can't get their act together to do their own publicity.

There are two round IoM races this year (and most years):

2 May 2004, starting Ramsey, organised by Manx Sailing & Cruising Club:
MSCC Race Office, The Lookout, South Promenade, Ramsey, IoM, IM8 1BG. Tel 01624 813494; fax: 01624 645744; e-mail: brian.quayle@seacontainers.com

30 May 2004, starting Port St Mary, oranised by Isle of Man Yacht Club:
Michael Kneale, IOMYC, Lime Street, Port St Mary, IoM IM9 5ED. Tel/fax: 01624 832088 (no e-mail address on entry form).

The IoM will definitely enter the 21st Century, but probably not before 2099. Sometimes, that's part of its attraction.

As Paddy says there are races organised. ISORA have also introduced a new, easier to compete class. From memory it is based upon a newish formula tried elsewhere, think it is a Corinthian class, and one feature is it gets you back to the bar by 18.00hrs, anything else, not sure.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone actually have any contact details for ISORA or know how to enter the races?

It might be a bit North for you but there are several races organised by the Morecambe Bay Sailing Association as well as several open races run by the local clubs - including our own Round the Island race ( Walney Island in this case ). If interested let me know and I'l give more details.
