If you are going as far as Ardglass you may as well visit Strangford and Portaferry. Strangford lough has had a new cardinal mark system installed which makes pilotage a bit easier. I can send you a mini chart with details if you want.
Ardglass has little to commend it other than an all-tides marina. You'd be unlikely to put it on your itinerary if touring Ireland by road. Strangford is a delight and you could easily spend a week in the Lough. Carlingford also lovely. Both (Strangford especially) can only be entered on the flood and departing wind (even F4) against tide is hazardous.
Howth is a good marina with lots of nearby boaty facilities and a pleasant town.
I'll try to copy and paste a reply I made earlier . The long and short of it is that youn should go to Dun Laoghaire. Its only a few extra miles up from Wicklow. The harbour wall in Wicklow is uncomfortable and busy with commercial traffic. I agree with above. The Purty Kitchen Pub and Restaurant has great food especially if you like seafood. Carlingford is the next stop great little medieval village very close to the Marina and then Strangford without a doubt maybe stopping at Quoile Yacht Club.
Pasted from a different thread: On this trip I think you should go for Kilmore Quay. There isn't much there in the way of amenity but you can provision and fuel up overnight and get some rest. I would then calculate the slingshot tide and go to Dun Laoghaire in one go. Very pleasant trip. Dun laoghaire has a great Marina with a train station. The town of Dun Laoghaire is just about OK but a half an hour stroll (or 10 min train!) south along the sea front brings you to Dalkey Village which is really worth it for the selection of Pubs and Restaurants catering to all budgets. The train also brings you to The City Centre in about half an hour. Dublin Tourism have just launched a new initiative where you can get brought around the city for free! see http://www.cityofathousandwelcomes.com/. Back in Dun Laoghaire there are Four Yacht clubs within walking distance of the Marina, some of which are quite swanky and all of which welcome visitiors. I would avoid city centre moorings. There is no need to slum it. I would choose Dunlaoghaire over Howth simply because you have much more within easy reach. Good luck. Send me a PM if you want more info
One place that has not been mentioned is Malhide. It has a good marina although there is some tidal flow inside. There's easy access to Dublin via the Dart. A nice quiet place although the bar at the marina is pricey.
I agree with most of the above. I see little value in stopping in Wicklow, apart from a welcoming sailing club, facilities are completely non-existent, you pay through the nose to tie up alongside a wall with very few ladders and the town has little to recommend it. Far better to hit Dun Laoghaire (20 nm further north) although the marina there is not cheap. However, there's easy access to Dublin city centre. Howth and Malahide also have good city centre access, Malahide being slightly further north, more restricted access but a much better selection of restaurants.
Further north again, Skerries is worth considering. There are usually moorings available, contact the sailing club for details.
Carlingford is definitely far more worth a vist than Ardglass but, again, restricted access so if the tides don't suit or you have strong wind v tide, better to head for Ardglass.
Dun Laghiare is ok. But you can come up the river Liffy to poolbeg marina. Small family freindly club with a bar. from there Walk into Dublin city centre or jump on the LUAS tram over the bridge from the yacht club. Full all tide access to club marina with elec, water, and fuel on the ponttons. Freindly club (although not open 24/7).
Glenarm in northern ireland was a little gem when we sailed over from scotland 4 years ago. On the glens of antrim scenic coast road. Just avoid july12th
Hi I would give wicklow a miss.DunLaoghaire is a large Marina and unless they have changed their systmn you are placed with the longest distance point from the exit to the street.Howth is a friendly spot. The marina is run by howth yacht club and there are good grub places close by.Malahide ,my base has a good marina, follow the marks from the safe waterbouy and you will be fine.Ring marina to check depth.Good gurb spots and supermarkets , shops ,banks and train to city close by.Skerries is exposed to north so watch weather .Port Oriel is the only bolt hole before Carligford, sturdy harbour but exposed to north.Ardglass is nice friendly little marina. You can get a nice meal in the golf club at a good price. There is little else but it is a good point to jump off from if you want to go to Strangford or to Peel. Good luck
