In relation to value for money, cleanliness, facilities, etc., would be interested to hear which Marinas you find the best and worst in Ireland.

Have visited a few myself and would consider Kinsale the best. Lovely town, friendly club and Marina and only 18 Euros or 14 after 2 days for an 8 M Yacht.

Worst probably my home port Kilmore Quay. Starting at 25 Euro for a small Yacht, almost certainly having to raft. Dirty harbour, public toilets only, and very poor health and safety and security.

I feel that clubs and private companies run the best Marinas, while Council run Marinas offer the worst standards.

Would be very interested in your views.

Cheers
Nigel

Re: Malahide

Anyone who can sail on the East Coast of Ireland regularly is dead lucky, I stoped off in Carlingford Marina (Carlingford Loch) earlier this year, what a contrast to that which we are used to Solent/South Coast, clear water beneath the boat, a very warm welcome (typical Irish?) loads of space and a beautiful setting. It was Sat PM and there was no more than three other boat out in the Loch, the local sailing club had a further 4 dinghies going aroud the cans.

Shh, don't tell the Southern mob, they all might want to visit.

That concrete ship in Carlingford Marina is interesting, never seen anything like it before.

It might not be the smartest marina, but they are very welcoming and helpful there. It was expanding as of last September, pontoons were being towed about by a tug. Imagine mooring up to the wrong pontoon and coming back to find not only the boat had moved but the pontoon it was tied to as well.

Re: Carlingford

2 years ago we stopped at carlingford marina.About midnight a 28 footer pulled into the nextdoor berth with the 2 lads on board looking a bit worse for wear. It transpired they had stopped off at the village quay to pick up a take-away,being high tide and not stopping long they felt confident leaving the boat unattended. They did notice so local kids on the quay throwing stones in the water, but thought nothing off it. On return after half an hour the found their boat drifting about 50 yds off, obviously cast off by the above kids. They managed to swim out, climb aboard and somehow still keep the take away dry! Very friendly in the marina, worth a trip, but watch out for the village quay!

West coast.

Kilrush: very clean, efficient with super old fashioned hardware shops in town- great for those odd bits and pieces.

Fenit: very clean, efficient, very friendly.

Dingle: clean, efficient, Marina in centre of town

Lawrence Cove: absolutely stunning setting, eating out-zilch.

Haven't tried the new one in Cahersiveen yet.

Ardglass and Ballycastle were both excellent when we were there in 2000

Bangor marina northern Ireland, the best and cleanest marina I have ever visited. Bangor itself is a nice clean town with loads of pubs and the night life at the weekend unbeliavable

The worst is Baltimore, very expensive to raft up to a concrete barge. Nice enough town, a couple of good pubs. Don't buy fuel there.

Had some lousy experiences in Baltimore, try to go to Sherkin now instead.
3 yachts broken into in last 24 hours at Kilmore. An elderly couple were asleap in one case. The authorities do not care. No security whatsoever.

If you want peace and quiet, anchor in Horseshoe harbour, Sherkin, instead of Mark's pontoon. Warps take a bashing on the pontoon with the wash from the ferries.

Howth is best I've visited on East Coast - Arklow the worst but better than many UK marinas. Ireland generally a very boat friendly place, definitely recommended.

I have to confess

that no irish marina rushes to mind as being "Good" - Howth is OK, but short on space whilst Kinsale Dennis Quay is quite convenient but always crowded, whilst Castlepark is in the wilderness.
However the anchorages are great - Glandore, Castletownshend, Sherkin, Crookhaven, Schull, Sherkin, Bearhaven, Sneem.

Across the other side of the water Pwllheli is one of the best in the British Isles whilst Groves and Gutteridge is probably at the other end of the scale.

further up Belfast Lough from Bangor is Carrickfergus Marina. Smaller than Bangor but brand new facilities and very pleasant - if you don't mind the 'zoo' factor with a lot of apartments round the perimeter.

Glenarm & Bangor

Just returned from a trip around the Mull of Kintyre; we staged through Glenarm up/return and spent three days in Bangor while doing the tourist bit. We found both of them very helpful and the charges reasonable for what was offered.

Bangor is a contrast [to Glenararm, a local council run initiative] in that it is a huge place and more expensive - again very pleasant reception but with excellent facilities.

Recommend both from experiences this year.

I wouldn't describe the barge at Baltimore as a marina . . .

Sorry we missed you when we were in Galway - couln't find your phone number.
