There are a few "tweeks" you are going to have to make for the phone to work, which I am unable to explain, as like virtually everything to do with marine electronics, WinXP wasn't about when they were being developed. If you bought a brand new laptop today you wouldn't get a serial port on most of them, all USB, and then it's upto £50 a time for a converter from USB to Serial which a lot of the instruments etc. still use to connect to a computer.

IMHO, keep it simple and stick with Win 98.

I presume that your iridium sat phone came with some software and drivers to enable it to work with Win98, if so you will need to obtain a WinXP set of drivers from the iridium manufacturer.

They are normally a free download from the manufacturers web site, I recently upgraded from WinMe to XP and had similar problems, but new drivers solved all but one problem (an old cannon scanner) although i don't have iridium I have a lot of diverse PC gadgets from GPS to bluetooth,Wifi devices and radio fax, And although with unusual things like iridium WinXP upgrade can be a hassle it is woth it imho.
If the iriduim manufacturer does not do specific WInXP drivers then Win2000 or at a pinch WinMe would work.

Any other help PM me

Hi,

Just got a PC with Windows XP and I wish it hadn't. It creates loads of problems with old software and kit.

Can't understand why new versions shouldn't be able to use older kit. I can understand the other way round, but not this way.

I really liked the old Win 95, and on the PC here at home I have two hard drives, one with Win 98 for the usual "domestic" stuff, and the other with Win 95 for all software relating to the boat. The PC on the boat has Win 95, even though it's only 4 weeks old.

Just a little hint which I hope will help you all....

Windows XP is a version of Windows NT, so it is always worth checking whether your marine devices have Windows NT 4.0 drivers and software versions on the CD/Disk supplied with it.

XP will normally say be able to make the best of this and you will be back working. :)

Cheers

You can make XP behave as any other windows eg 95 or 98 by opening " Program Compatibility Wizard " and following directions.

I'm using it with Windows 2000, which is also NT, but older than XP. Also have XP on some computers, but haven't tried Iridium. I remeber it wasn't easy to get it working on W2000. Whenever you change something you usually have to re-boot and and also re-power cycle the phone. Very tedious, but it does work in the end.
One problem I remeber is that you need to turn off the FIFO's on the serial ports, which possibly makes other things you may connect there not work properly.
But since W2000 is working, the likelyhood that it also works with XP is fairly high.

I have a HP shettfeed scanner ...

Win 95 / 98 ...... fantastic piece of kit

Win 98se and later ...... stupid ornament ... as Gates and Paperport decided that it was necessary to make me buy a new one - as the 4s has no upgrade drivers.

So what did I do ..... removed Win 2000 ....(load of rubbish anyway) and installed plain old version 1 Win 98 ..... would you believe it if I now said in all honesty that the machine works without crashing every 20 minutes, old and new programs run without hassle, scanner is back as a useful tool in my office ..... bloody hell at this rate I'll go back to Dr DOS and have a real holiday from Bill Gates nightmares !!!!

As to Iridium and XP ...... you have my sympathy !! Since Gates decided to influct variants of NT4 on the public via 2000 Pro etc. the world has decided to go to war instead of fix the bugs and glitches / crashes of windows ..... !

a bad workman etc

as a dealer and repairman of *!*! billgates *!!! i am a cynical old b, however xp and its variants are the best thing since sliced bread, easy to load, intuitive, CRASH PROOF,
95 & 98 not crashing? get real!!
and just a thought before i get deluged, do you still run around in a moggie minor or equivalent with cross ply tyres? the sun always shined when we went on our hols in the moggie, didnt it?
cause using your analogies that is what you would be doing if you followed them!!!
if you are up grading your car do you swop the old exhaust, tyres etc from the old to the new?
come on!!

You have my admiration ...

as being one of the few who support Gates and his nightmares without problems.

I pay for every drop-out and crash with mybusiness .... I rely on constant and steady communication via e-mail / ftp etc. I cannot in all fairness say that I get that now. I have myself .... 3 years full study on computers etc. + full=time contracted IT specialists maintaining my office gear etc. I am not the 'be-all and end'all of Computers', but I am also not a dunce.

I have more crashes and problems with later versions of windows than with earlier versions.

I have lost use of Freecom portable CD writers, HP Sheetfeed scanners, Camera software etc. etc. even my Book-keepers sfotware was crashed out and had to be replaced by Mr. Gates IMPROVED later windows .....

No sorry mate ..... take of the balaclava and put away the train-spotters guide ..... the real world is a lot more s---e than that !!! I know - it costs me moaney !!

Yawn yawn

your not listening,
your the one who should be wearing the funny clothes!!
if you put xp on old tack and expect it to work without new drivers etc you are living on another planet.
most businesses chop in their vehicules every 3 years, do they keep the old tyres, exhausts? no, they have all new along with the new machinery, so why buy a new OS and expect it to work properly with old tack?
your statements that older systems dont crash as much as the newer ones is a load of bunkum, as a chap who makes a living out of repairing and looking after systems i know that the latest OSs are far far superior to the old ones.
if your "+ full=time contracted IT specialists maintaining my office gear etc"
support your views i am not surprised that you are having problems, as i said in the previous post, "bad workmen blame their tools"
stu
ps: money doesnt have an "a" in it

The best advice you will get is on a forum such as Extreme Tech or Teh New Forum. Tell them exactly what your system is and was. You may find Win 2000 drivers work. Drivers are a problem with XP which is a superb OS.

If you have checked out the msn site and/or phoned them for advice and still can't solve it, perhaps something on Black Viper's site will help. Black Viper's is a specialist Windows site but has no forum. A superb FAQ though -and he's a bit touchy with people that don't bother reading them.
