Hi I thought I would ask here. Basically I found my perfect Moody 30 in Ipswich and I need to get it to North Wales. Having problem finding a way to get it up here. I'm told by friends that the journey could take weeks and the standard of sailing needed on the south coast is very high and they don't recommend i do it till i get more experience. Hate to miss out on this Moody 30. Can anyone recommend a cheap but good delivery service by sea or road? She has plotters and radar etc and totally seaworthy.

Straightforward trip which should be fine with an experienced crew and a well found boat.
If you can handle Bardsey sound, Caernarfon bar and the Swellies, the south coast shouldnt prove too demanding ( yes i know there are bumpy bits and far more shipping there than Cardigan bay ).
If youre not experienced then its a great chance to gain the experience if you find a paid skipper who's prepared to teach on passage.

Why sail south??

Sail 'up the east coast' and through the Caledonian canal http://www.scottishcanals.co.uk/our-canals/caledonian-canal/boating and down the West coast and boy will you see some nice scenery.

Serious answer: phone round and emails to lots of yacht delivery companies. There are plenty, many on here have done deliveries and will have their favourites.
Delivery by sea is the sensible way, as the delivery crew will fix things on the way, and she will have had a really good shakedown run to find any snags, because there will be some, rest assured.
If you send her by lorry, she will arrive with extra damage and nothing sorted.

The most important thing is to set off with clean fuel in a clean tank.
You can accompany them by arrangement.
Have a good trip and let us know how you get on, cheers Jerry

I'm told by friends that ......................the standard of sailing needed on the south coast is very high....................

That made me smile. Are your friends south coast sailors :)

Ipswich to North Wales is quite a long journey. The summer season is approaching so the weather is more likely to be on your side, nevertheless, it's wise to sail with good weather, not against a strict timetable.

I've taken two of my boats to North Wales. The first one I bought in Sweden. Our UK port of arrival was Gt Yarmouth. Simply didn't have the time available for more week-day sailing so I had her trucked overland. The cost was reasonable, to be honest. Lots of ads in the magazines.

We bought a boat from Southampton last summer and had a fantastic delivery trip to North Wales. It took 11 days and 500 NM, we mostly day sailed and had just one 3-day stop-over waiting for fair weather.

I'm a big believer that boats are made to be sailed. But, if you don't have the time get it trucked and enjoy Caernarfon (may even see you in the Menai Straits).

If you do sail her, I'd certainly turn left out of Ipswich. I wouldn't risk the congested traffic and high standards required for the south coast when you could head north and through the canal to the stunning west coast of Scotland.

What ever you decide. Good luck.

I've been through a similar loop. Biggest problem is you're sailing an unknown boat with possible issues. I would say that if she's out of the water at the moment then transport her back. If she's in the water and in commission then sail her back.

There are pros and cons of both methods. If you want your boat safely in North Wales with no damage, minimum cost and shortest possible time then delivery by road is the only way. If you have plenty of time, want to use the trip to learn about your new boat and are not bothered about cost or potential damage, wear and tear, then do it by sea. If you don't have the skills then hire a professional skipper to help you. Ups the cost but you will learn a lot, probably have a great time and end up with a well sorted boat.
