Any thoughts by way of comparison between these two for a permanent berth, other than the rather obvious one of the lock at Ipswich Haven,

Regards

We entertained Mr Pd this w/e
Good friendly marina & club staff first class, sheltered berthing, easy access both to the river & road / rail.
No high handed bureaucracy, lift-out deals for berth holders + very skilled boat handling by marina staff.
we have at least 7 forumites ( if that is any indicator )
also quite a few evenings arranged by the club in the near future
berthing fees the same for the past 3 yrs & no increase for 2012

I seriously considered moving from the Haven to Foxes as I like the bar there. Spoke to the very nice berthing chap but he couldn't promise an "easy" berth which as a predominantly singlehander is a big deal. I can get into most places on my own but space looked particularly tight where I was offered. Shame as I like Foxes. If I didn't have a good berth at Ipswich, I would still have moved to Foxes.
Incidentally, I find the wet dock lock pretty straight forward except when coming home with the wind up the chuff (folding props don't slow you down very well !)

I agree the lock isn't really a problem, but it's all time and we live two hours drive away so I reckon that Fox's would save at least an hour on a Sunday evening.

Sailorman,

Does teh scrap yard almost next door cause any problem - I'm thinking of fine metal dust causing rust, that sort of thing.

Fox's is primarily a boat yard (and one of the best on the East Coast). For this reason many people bring their boats into Fox's to have them worked on. They do this when they have time, often in the evening when there is no marina master. If there is no clear visitor's slot, they will put their boat into whichever slot is clear. In our case, too often the slot was ours, and we had to raft up while we cleared the boat. In the end we moved to Shotley.

Sadly finding an interloper in ones berth when returning at the end of a weekend's sail is an experiance which is not unique to Fox's.

Kept my last boat at Fox's for a year or so, it was a convienant location but I got fed up with all the **** accumulating on the boat from the adjacent bulk handling quays. This was about 10 years ago so things may have improved since then.

There is now a green & red disc system on place 2 denote ok to use the berth or not, this seems 2 work.
The scrap yard problem is now much better since the EA have taken action and we are pro active .

Yes, my boat was hauled out there last year, the rubbish from the scrap yard was dreadful, i dont know about fine metal dust, it was just filth. Infact there was a notice on the HM's door saying if you have any issues with this take it up with... and he gave the scrap yards telephone number, so he was obviously fed up with dealing with complaints.

The phone number you were given is the EA complaints dept. This logs the call to be used against the scrap yard.

The only time I have been in Fox's there was a pretty foul stench from the sewage outfall on the opposite side of the river, apart from that I think it has quite a lot going for it, but I imagine peace and quiet is not its forte.

the only noise is the extract from The Ostrich Pub & occasionally the very large hoover on the dock unloading ships

Ipswich gets my vote

Hiya

Ipswich would get my vote! Helpful, buzzy and lots going on!
However there can be some noise from the clubs in the summer (but on the plus side it makes for some great people watching - hand bags at dawn or what!!!).

As for Fox's - If you can't say anytihng nice.... don't say anything at all!!!!

I'll leave it there!!!

Regards

Ian
