Hi all

Looking at the esteemed ECP, I can't see how this would be doable without facing a foul tide?

In order to reach the Deben bar at HW-2, I would need to leave Ipswich at around HW-5/6, and would have foul tide leaving Ipswich and heading North out of Felixstowe.

I'm guessing there's nothing to be done about it.

Thanks

David

Hi David,

Leave Ipswich at LW Harwich -2, down to Halfpenny Pier. Ashore for refreshment until whatever time your speed tells you to leave to arrive at the Deben bar at HW-2. The only foul tide you'll see is along Felixstowe beach, where it doesn't run too hard, although that time of day it will be around mid tide. If you don't fancy refreshments ashore in Harwich, go for a sail round the Cork when you get down to Harwich. I take the view that sailing is one of the world's greatest pleasures, so no need to be looking always for the shortest possible time for a passage.

Hi Peter

Thanks for that, if the tide times work to do that and get to Woodbridge in daylight then that would be a superb day out, however I was looking at a situation where HW was around 1500 and I had to do the trip in a single day.

Access to the Deben depends on you draft and how much of a comfort zone you want under your keel.
We came in today about HW-3 and saw no less than 3.5m. that is on a predicted tide of about 2.3 at that time.
I came out a few weeks ago at HW-5 and saw no less than 1.5m.
You do have to punch the tide out of Harwich and along the Felexstowe sea front.
I would lock out of Ipswich and take the last of the ebb down the river.
Depending on weather ether stop at Halfpenny peir as suggested above or go for an extened sail to wait for the time you are happy to enter.
As a guide I usually allow about 3 hours from Shotley to Ramsholt.

Ahhh Sorry

Just re-read your post. That makes total sense now. Take the ebb down to Harwich and get an Ice cream :)

Thanks for that.

No need to put too much priority on favourable tides into you passage plan. Wind speed and direction is far more important. No point having an ice cream at Harwich whilst a favourable wind is blowing. It may turn about or die whilst you are loading up on calories.
