I'm planning a trip to Ipswich, maybe up to the new marina. Can anyone recommend a decent place for an evening meal either near the marina or in town?

Ta!

Good Indian Etc ..

Two Marina's in the lock at the top ..

No one ever seems to aound a Neptune except when its time to pay .. Don't leave
through the gate without getting the code from someone otherwise you may not be able to get back to your boat ..

Ipswich Haven is more open and the berths are not as tight .. Great group of people .. Very Helpful ..

We spent a year up in the GOLDFISH BOWL ..

Best Indian we found was http://www.apassagetoindiaipswich.com

Good value for money .. Large portions .. Staff very pleasant ..

Some Restaurants on the quay but they seem expensive and have not heard any recommendations ..

You can walk round from HAven to Neptune .. If you then head towards town you will find the Indian .. There is also a chippy nearby .. Provisions from Sainsbury's in town .. About a 15 minute walk ..

Have a great time ..

Lock is Ok .. Gets a bit busy on a nice day .. Prepare for rafting .. Normally a floating pontoon in the lock so its not to bad .. Starboard Side on your way in ..

Many Thanks exfinnsailor. It needs to be reasonable at the Ipswich end as my friend and I are taking two novices (my SWMBO and his SWMBO). If the passage to Ipswich is slightly not up to their expectations I want a decent night out to ameliorate the difficulty!! ;)

The Bistro on the Quay is worth a visit but you'll need to book in advance. We were in Haven marina a few weeks ago and both the Bistro and the Last Anchor were fully booked ... on a Thursday! We walked in to town and enjoyed a meal at a place called Keo's.

We went to the Haven a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Very friendly and good facilities. Much nicer than Neptune that has no facilities on site (even the loos are across the road).

The lock is on free flow near HW but if you have to wait there is plenty of room to pootle about or a waiting pontoon. It's a big lock with a pontoon so not difficult.

Happy Times in Ipswich

Hope you enjoy the trip Stoneness .. It can take an age to get to the bridge .. Give the lock a call as you go under the bridge .. You maybe with others and they will wait if they know you are on the way .. Traffic lights to enter .. Give the tower a wave as you leave .. They sometimes have a lauugh .. " Going Up .. Haberdashery etc .. " Enjoy your trip .. As MoodySabre says when you see the yachts in front of you .. TURN TO PORT .. The marina is on your PORT Side .. Channel 80 "Ipswich Haven" .. Lots to do in Ipswich ..

The Isaac Lord on the quay is fun, with good food & beer (turquoise colour on the right as you go in- can't miss it)
The Bistro on the quay very good, and others along the same stretch.

We ate at the Lord Nelson recently and had a good meal, I don't know if it used to be better as it was my first visit, but it was OK pub food and not expensive.
