Would I be right in thinking that the Volvo IPS is an hydraulic pump attached to the engine? (to put it simply)

No, it's a fairly conventional mechanical transmission, with clever outdrives.

ah, I saw a picture, and it looked like hefty hydraulic pipe work, I suppose those are for steering rather than drive.
