Hi All,

Just got this info courtesy of BoatTEST.com

BoatTEST.com testing found that in the Formula 45 --

The IPS version weights about 1700-lbs less
The IPS model costs $19,620 (MSRP) Less that the V-drive model
The IPS system has 280-hp less, total, in the twin installation
The IPS version has a WOT speed of 37.9 mph on our radar gun vs. 36.2 (5% Faster)
The IPS burns at cruise 31.5 gph vs 46.5 for the V-drive version (33% Less)
The IPS has a cruising range of 320 miles vs. 217 miles (47% more range at 90% tankage)
The IPS has the Joy Stick which makes everyone look like a pro and keeps marriages together!!

I wonder what IPS vs Sterndrive would be!

More Here!

Well if I was buying a 45fter with Red diesel going skyward it would have to be IPS! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Actually there would be little difference in the performance between IPS and Outdrives in fact outdrives would probably be slightly better again but they have their limits and past 46' they get very lively, technically it would be possible but you would need to have some sort of speed related steering response cus at 36 knts give it full helm and you will end up doing a very spectacular 180 with everyone ending up on the floor.

Sterndrives are only available up to 350hp or similar so can never compete with IPS in the 45ft+ market. IPS is a shaftdrive competitor really

Thats an amazing difference! Is there any point in actually selling a V-Drive version and how do they manage to make it $20k cheaper?

Noticed on the Sealine website they give an IPS option on the S42 now so you can add them to the list.

totally true, but I think there might be something in the pipe line that will allow the D6 435's be mated to outdrives which would mean you could think of 50 footers, the reality though is far easier to go IPS with joy stick, station holding and a more planted feel.

Mmm, I'd rather not be the helmsman that has to manouvre a 50ft sterndrive boat into a tight windy marina berth. Anyway I think it's accepted that 35ft+ flybridge boats and sterndrives don't mix so the D6 sterndrive would probably be limited to sports cruisers only

I think as yet the IPS will dominate mostly the hardtop open boat market 13 - 18 mtrs is my guess
still as I said on another post
while we have seen a revolution in open boats 12 - 16 mtrs equipped with it, on flybridge boats the situation seems much slower
as I have seen any FB yacht making the change
now the IPS 500 @ 435 HP could be interesting for the following boats = Fairline 40 Phantom, Princess 42, Azimut 39, 42 and 43, Astondoa 43, Sealine 42/5
and many other builders how is it none of them did the change to IPS yet?
I think the battle in shaft vs IPS is not so easy
what are the running / maintenance costs for the new drives?
For e.g. with shafts vs stern drives, it is so easier maintaining shafts? Will consumption and better performance beat less maintance?
which is the most solid on the water? Do IPS give the solidity a shaft driven boat usually has?
