IPCs Interview with Guy Lewis. RYA's legal bloke, on Red Diesel

Oh dear...

Well, the RYA spokesman had some useful things to say but the production was truly awful. Presenters reading their questions (badly) from scripts does nothing to enhance the IPC titles. It just looked like Toy Town TV.

I couldn't hear his answers at all, so gave up.

They were wrong anyway! I emailed him about the place where he said that sailors from the Irish Republic could also claim a rebate on domestic fuel (which they cannot) and he wrote back to deny having said that. I wrote back to him suggesting that he review his words around 6:30 into the interview and he never replied!

Amateur night at IPC

I don't understand how an organisation like IPC can produce such poor quality video. OK I know they are print publishers and may know nothing of TV or video but surely they could hire in a producer/director who could at least make a professional looking video. This amateur rubbish does them no favours - they'd be better off sticking to printing magazines.

Not only did the presenters have to read their pre-prepared questions (written in stilted language better suited to print than broadcast media) but the director chose to show a CU of them reading the script. Either he or she was being cruel exposing the lack of experience of the questioners or it was just gross inexperience. It made the presenters look daft - as if they'd hadn't the wit to form their own questions but had to read what they'd been given.

Sound quality was awful too and that stick mic went out with the ark..has IPC not heard of personals?

What's really frustrating is that it could be so much better and would not cost a fortune but if this is the best they can do they'd be better off concentrating on print publishing and leaving video to the pros.

I've got no problem with the televisual production quality - yes, it's awful, but this was only ever intended as information, not entertainment. What hacks me off is the RYA's attitude of saying "Our policy is 'cross your fingers and hope you don't get caught'."

How about they suggest how we can comply when going foreign? How about they suggest how visiting boats can refuel in the UK and stay legal at home?

I think it's also fair to say that doing a TV interview is new to them and I'm sure they have learnt a lot from it. I just hope they don't shy away from doing more after reading the feedback on here. Instead they take on board the positive criticism and build on it.

Hi
I don't know the ins and outs of this but I am not 100% sure IPC controlled this?

The majority of our on-line video is either done by the photographer with sound added afterwards (boat report etc) or they have personal s so I am not sure why they do not have them here. Perhaps they were invited down to ask the questions?

Will get back to you but if you look at the majority of our other stuff (each brand site) you will see its put together with a reasonable amount of professionalism given the tools we have!

IPC Video

Richard,

Thanks for your swift comments.

If this was an RYA production with IPC journalists invited to take part then that is not at all clear. That begs the question who drafted the questions? Did the RYA supply a list of questions they wanted asked? I thought that sort of faux journalism vanished just after the War.

Whoever made the video desperately needs some training on basic video skills.

If it's an RYA production then it should be signposted as such. At the moment it looks very much as if it's an IPC production and that does you no favours at all. I couldn't watch more than a minute or so, the awful production values totally swamped the content. With a half-professional production both the RYA and IPC could have emerged with kudos, as it is both look rank amateurs.

Anyway, good for you for springing into action and we look forward to discovering which organisation has the budding Spielberg.

Could you convey my thanks? I thought it was excellent.

(I'll forgive them Maby's point, although I'm sure Maby's right.)
