IPC using your details for advertising

Sorry first post disappeared.

It is common practice to opt out of written correspondence (tick the box) and opt in of email correspondence (tick the box).

IPC follows this, well marine does other areas of the business may word it differently but I cannot comment on this.

I hope this helps.

I think it is unfair to ask Richard that question as an employee of IPC. I think he has been very prompt in his answers and is doing everything he can to clarify the situation.

IPC think it is a good idea to make us opt out and that is the issue. I think I will opt out completely and cancel my subscription dependent on outcome.

No come on.
You can't expect Richard to go against company policy in any way, even if he should not agree with it.
It's his job after all.
I've worked for large corporations and you don't get brownie points for saying in public that you don't agree with company policy.

But I'm certain that Richard will report the general mood of all this back to HQ.

Sorry if I'm speaking your lines here Richard.

Ron.

many thanks!

I am in marketing it is my job to communicate with you and of course sell you things that's my job, but it is only my job to sell you (or tel you) about things that are related to my titles.

The reason we have many thousands of people receiving the ybw.com weekly emails is because they have asked to receive it.

Even on our boat show stand here we have opt in / out for the competitions and our staff clearly explain what each of it means so we are not trying to obtain your information dishonestly.

And I am still waiting for this piece of paper! its somewhere between Southbank and Canary wharf so nearly here!

Ah you need a faster pigeon.

Actually I've found, in a mag that's not related to sailing and is published by Magicalia Media, exactly the same sort of thing.
The 'contact by email/telephone/mobile' from other interested parties, is an opt in, but contact by post is an opt out.
And it's in incredibly small print, must be about 2 points high.

Ron

Ok I have it in front of me, I have read it and it makes interesting reading.

I have put a call into the office to speak to the right person as to why we have done this. They are at lunch and will return at 1430 hours (UK), so those in sunnier climes reading this can get stuck into a banks and await my reply!

Thanks

Ok I have an answer for you, well the shortened answer.

Firstly as I stated earlier when we first "communicate" with you be it selling you a subscription or handling your competition entry we will capture your data.

At this time you are given the chance to opt out of mail and opt in to email, this information is then added to your field on the database. If you have opted out / in this information will be retained for as long as we keep your data and you will or will not receive information from us.

The reason we have placed this lasted wording on the subscription sheet is to give customers who may have not been asked the question, such as a recipient of a subscription thats was a gift to opt in or out.

The long and short of it is if you have originally opted out / in then you do not need to worry about it, this wording has apparently been on the subs carrier sheets for a few years but is more prominent this month because of the online ad that falls at the bottom.

So please do not panic we are not asking you to do anything unless you want to.

If you are unsure as to whether you are opted / in / out PM me and I will pass this onto database marketing who will check your file.

And before you all asked about secure files etc, we cannot even walk through the building unless we have a password protected CD / file so your data is very secure and safe!

I hope this helps, admittedly its not the clearest piece of communication we have ever put out but I hope this answers your questions.

Thank you

Richard

OK.
Thanks Richard.

Can I ask you another question on this point.
You may not know the answer which is OK.
Is it the UK/EU/World law that says it MUST be email/phone automatically out unless you opt in, and mail automaticaly in unless you opt out?
Or is it just that it MAY be like this.

I mean is it actually illegal to have everything automatically out unless you opt in?

Sorry to labour the point, and I know it's all legal stuff.

Ron

Ok

As I said data is a complex animal, IPC abides by the UK data protection law which states that you have to opt in to email and opt out of mail. As far as I am aware some companies will allow you to automatically opt out of mail by asking you to opt in, IPC does not practice this method.

But the Law is always to opt in to email.

I hope this helps.

Thank you

I can partially answer your question.
Knowing that in Italy it is strictly mandatory for anything on this matter to be handled via OPT IN, I would reasonably assume that it can't be an EU regulation.
Re 'world law', I guess there's no need to comment - you were just joking, weren't you? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, of course.
There's no such thing as world law. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But so much in the UK is put down to 'EU Directives' that I included the EU.

So it seems that the situation is:

It's not illegal to have opt out for postal mail.
In the UK at least.

But I still think it is immoral.
And if there's a law against opt out for telephone and email, but not for postal mail, then the law, as always, is an ass.

Ron

Hmmm, looks like I started a bit of a storm there. I hadn't realised that the 'offending' section was always on the paper slip, I only paid attention to it this time because there was more info than usual (i.e. the bit about managing your subscription online). Perversely although you can edit your address details etc. online there is no option to select/edit your opt in/out of marketing preferences.

Thanks to Richard for putting so much effort into clarifying this whilst at the boat show.

Mike

As an "outsider" this is a great read!!!! It may even rival 24. Will Richard get that pieceof paper which is crossing London in a taxi before Mike BZ blows a gasket and did that woman he met last night opt in or opt out. The action takes place between 15.26 on 16/01 and 17.41 0n 16/01. We need more of this action packed stuff. PHEW!!!!!!
