Hi,

As an iPad novice, can the iPad experts advise me whether the iPad2+3G needs to be connected to the phone network for the GPS to work, or does the 3G connection merely enhance the GPS positioning ?

What are the recommended options for water/shockproofing an iPad ?

I have Navionics charts o/board, does the panel recommend their app ?

Appreciate any advise.

GPS receiver is built in so nothing to do with phone network.
Navionics app is excellent but not available again until the end of the month say Navionics.

The GPS could not find us when I first switched the iPad on in Greece after leaving the ferry. It asked for the 3G to be switched on and then found us quickly. No idea whether it would have found us if I had not, but it seemed unlikely. Once it knows roughly where you are it doesn't seem to care whether 3G is on or not.

I'm sure it would have eventually. My iPod ....old one with silver back....has no phone, it's just an iPod...has the Navionics app and it works perfectly.

My understanding is the Wifi only one doesn't have a GPS but the 3G one does, so will work fine even when nowhere near a phone signal.

According to the technical specs, the GPS is 3G-enhanced, meaning that it will work without a 3G connection, but will get a quicker fix with.

This is correct. The GPS receiver is part of the 3G chip (which is why it isn't present on the WiFi only model) and it uses the local tower information to speed up the position calculation.

My iPod touch 2nd gen has no phone chip yet has gps receiver. Makes me wonder if all the iPods pads phones do in fact have one?

According to the specs there is no gps in my iPod. However there does appear to be one, that's what made me wonder if in fact all the devices have gps.

In what way does it "appear" to have one? Locating you in a built-up area is no proof, as it may be working on known wifi network positions.

OK I don't live in a built up area, there are no buildings nearby.
This is a screen shot from the iPod.

Notice the gps symbol top right and my position shown.
The wifi is not on.
I would very much like to know how my position is shown if the iPod has no gps in it.
